  1. Well I'm back now, and still have the grin on my face...

Once again thanks for the help - had a fine meal in Blau Ecke, and the museum was definitely worth a visit.

As for the laps - simply mind blowing! Highly recommended for anyone who has an interest in quick motors and spirited driving. Took my breath away and had me laughing out loud several times. OK so I didn't trouble the lap record in any way, but it was still a gas.

Nice to be part of the Subaru community there too. Thanks to fellow GB270 Wagon owner Chris for the loan of an i-phone mount (sorry I broke it!) and to Jamie for a stunning passenger lap in his highly modded Blob STi.

Lost over half of an evening session when the track was closed for this:

Guy was alright, but what has he thinking of? A VW Touareg? Ideal vehicle for some quick laps round the Ring...

So a brilliant trip, and now I want to go back - with a track car and very deep pockets!!!

  2. So it's a couple of weeks until the wrinklies go the Nurburgring. Something I've always fancied, so at the grand old age of 61 me and my (older) brother are going in a couple of weeks.

Any advice would be welcome - not so much for driving the Ring - I'll be the one on the right with my right hand indicator going timing my laps with a calendar. But if you know of any other things to see/do in the area, good restaurants etc then I'd be pleased to hear.

    Thanks.

  3. You have my deepest sympathy!! Same thing happened to me - drunk driver wrote my works Hilux off whilst it was parked outside the house.

Thing is, that was in September last year, and the whole things is still not finally settled. I seem to have had hundreds of conversations with dozens of different people/companies. I found it - and am still finding it - incredibly stressful.

So I'm with Gus here - if it happened again tomorrow I would put it straight into the hands of an accident management company. Sadly I don't have one to recommend.

    Good luck.

  4. I did the performance driving course a few years back when I had a WRX blob and thoroughly enjoyed it - hopefully you will too.

Yes, make sure the car is fully checked over, de cluttered and filled with Shell's finest - amazing the amount of fuel you will go through.

My instructor was very good - from a sedate pace to get to know the circuit, she upped the pace through the session until I was going as fast as I felt comfortable with. "Spirited" driving is definitely ok - that's what you're there for. If my WRX could handle it you should have no worries in an STi. Went out for blocks of roughly 10 laps, and towards the end when the speed was up, the brakes were definitely going off towards the end of the run.

The only issue I had was with the description - "Peformance Driving Course". It wasn't really. It was an hour of fun designed to get you driving the Knockhill circuit as fast as possible. That was all I did, and it was enough for me. However, you don't often get the chance to drive your car in such a controlled environment, so you might want to investigate how your car behaves - what happens if I lift off in a corner for instance. Or play with your DCCD to find how different settings affect the handling.

I really wouldn't worry about a lap time - just enjoy yourself and learn a bit. (If you want to get an idea of lap times have a look at You Tube - loads of track day videos at Knockhill up there.) And if you want an experience, hand the car to the instructor for a couple of laps. I mean, I thought I was going quickly, but they're in a different league!

I came away with a big grin on my face - hopefully you will too. Let us know how you get on with that and the rally experience.

    Good luck.

  5. So anticipating this weekends F1 season opener, though I'd have a look at Albert Park Melbourne in Google street view.

Interesting because half of it seems to be done when it was set up for a race, and half normal - fences and kerbs appear, streetlamps disappear.

(Mind you, you'll never get that 15 minutes back...)

  6. Last Saturday evening a drunk driver crashed into Weedman's weedvan when it was parked outside my house – it looks like it will be written off. No idea what speed he was going, but it sounded like a bomb had gone off! Now the Hilux is nine years old, so I won’t get much money in settlement, despite the fact it is worth a lot more than market value to me – it had a lot of useful life left in it, and I had no plans to replace it. As you can see from the photo it is set up as a spray vehicle – the spray kit cost £9,000.

Additionally, once I get a settlement cheque from the insurance company, according to them I can no longer have a courtesy vehicle – as if I can go out the next day and buy a replacement Hilux. We all know it doesn’t work like that. What if I want to buy a new vehicle and it’s on 12 weeks delivery – do I stop work in the meantime because I haven’t got a van? Or pay for a hire van out of my own pocket?

So it looks like I will be considerably out of pocket through absolutely no fault of my own. Does anyone know whether I can take any kind of legal action against the drunk driver to recover any costs?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

  7. I've had a couple of comments along the lines that I should be driving a car more suited to my age (mid 60's) !

I usually reply that in view of my age I'm limiting it to under 500BHP.

As a 60 yr old myself, big thumbs up to that comment from me as well!!!
