  1. I'm just waiting for the inevitable posts from some clown who fitted winters without the temperatures being low enough to justify it, telling us how he / she just plowed into a bus stop full of lawyers because their winter tyres disintegrated. No doubt followed by a plethora of posts about insurance price hikes being outrageous. Where's my popcorn

  2. Given that you're in Scotland I'd have said going for winter tyres may well be a sensible option. Most of the UK wont get cold enough for long enough to justify the switch . I'd rather be rolling on a set of decent all rounders than a shagged out set of winters. I reckon the best winter tyres are Conti wintercontacts (TS830). I'm going to have a set of 225/45/17s ready, in case we get it as bad as last year, down here in southern England (given the councils don't seem to give a **** about gritting the roads down here anymore).

  3. I'll second that... I had 2 classics, 1 new age and now a Hatch! :P

I hope you aren't planning on selling it (the hatch) anytime soon. I was offered a 2009 59 plate 330s, with 3500 miles on the clock, for 20 grand. That was from a reputable main dealer :o That is some depreciation :barf: I'm no fan of the hatch, but they are a cracking looking used buy. I could almost forgive its hideousness at that price <_<

  4. The new saloon STI is quite a car, and is at least a bit in keeping with the spirit of the impreza name, the price is an absolute joke however. The hatchback STI did exactly what Subaru intended, and increased the appeal to people who couldn't give a monkeys about the driving experience and just wanted to be able to say "my car has got 300 of those horse thingys that make it go really fast, and loads of buttons that do stuff". They were so popular in the UK that Subaru UK still haven't shifted the cars they imported 2 years ago. I'm loving the idea of the RWD coupe, especially the mooted pricing of circa 25 grand. I do agree that the impreza name should have died with the Hawkeye saloons however. I think Subaru would benfit from dropping the boxer layout for the engine as well. With the current exhausts you can't hear the burble anymore, even with the unequal headers, and the wieght distribution argument doesn't hold true anymore, as you can achieve a low centre of gravity equaly well with a straight upright inline 4 by making sure you position the manifolds so that you don't have to run the exhausts under the engine. That's what mitsubishi have done with the Evo X and it works very well. Personaly I see Subaru regressing back to being suppliers of capable but dull "farmers friends" fairly soon.

  5. Or blow (pardon the pun) the coke money and take the easily achievable 3 grand discount on a Evo 360 for the 33 grand - not that I'm ready to justify spending that amount on a car to the 'little lady' just yet !!

I was offered a pre reg 360 with the SST box for 29 grand yesterday. I've never been so tempted by a car in my whole life (this coming from a die hard scoob fan)

  6. I will sin as well then :-)

The Evo X looks better as well

I'm going to join the sinners club now. I can get an FQ300 Evo x for 8 grand less than the new sti. I can get an FQ330 for 3 grand less than the new STI. Both of these evos plant a foot firmly in the nuts of the STI and vomit in it's face in every single department, I'm afraid. The advantage of the sti being cheaper has now gone. I think I'll have a serious look at the FQ300 and spend the 8 grand I'll save on coke and hookers.

  7. Sorry but the new 4door saloon is £33,000

Subaru seem to have made a monumental cock-up with their pricing. How can they justify a 33 - 37000 dollar price tag in the US, and a 33450 pound OTR price in the UK for what is essentialy the same car? At that price they can get stuffed. There are too many better cars in that price bracket. The thing that's always attracted me to the scoobs is the fact they are a lot of fun for not much cash. 33450 OTR ( before extras) is a complete joke. Obviously they only want company car fleet managers as customers or something, because anyone who spends that on an impreza needs help :redcard: . And as for 50 grand for a hatch which has been tweeked by Cosworth :laughing4::icon_fU: I'll stick to my trusty old Hawkeye until they get a grip.

  8. Yes apparently the 7% failure rate across just over 1000 cars (16 cars with mulitiple failure) are pretty much all the customers fault. The body swerving that continues on this subject is pretty impressive. The 2.5ltr engine in the 08/09 STI's appears to have been under engineered and has an inherent weakness.

This is a global issue, Subaru have failed to nip it in the bud and now they have reached a point where they find it difficult to climb down and do the right thing for all the customers that have stayed brand loyal and kept them in business.

Shame on you Subaru. Your customers are voting with there feet and are unlikely ever to return.

What they are saying is kind of true. For example, the EJ25 engines can run on 95 RON fuel, but if you insist on doing so and putting the engine under high loads, you can pretty much bank on an engine failure sooner or later. They have to be able to run on 95 RON to get the UK type approval, that doesn't mean that it's a sensible idea to run it on 95 RON fuel. I've only ever run mine on 97 - 99 RON fuel and not had any troubles with the engine.

  9. Where does a £33,000 price tag come from ? I'd have been very interested at around £27k, but now I'll wait until the hopefully more affordable coupe is launched in a couple of years....Shame !!

33,000 is the price in US Dollars, not pounds. I reckon it'll be about 25,000 pounds all in (give or take a bit for the increase in VAT etc).

  10. I've been doing a lot of reading about power output on the forums and wondered if someone can answer a question I have.

My car is stated as having almost 270bhp with about 400nm of torque as top line. Equally others state that following a dyno run they've got X bhp and Y torque.

So, where are these measurements taken? Is it at the crank, or wheel? I'm guessing at the crank but then if a 'rolling-roaded' car posts a figure, is that a derived sum at the crank taking drivetrain losses into account or is that 'at the wheels'?

Sorry if this is really basic stuff but I'm really not sure, are we in fact driving cars with, in my case, 270ish at the wheels or actually significantly less due to mechanical losses?

The graph that is produced by a rolling road / dyno is torque / RPM at the wheels. The BHP / RPM is then calculated using a simple (ish) equation and overlayed on the torque /RPM graph. The wheels are run down against the slowing rollers and the torque / RPM , BHP /RPM is calculated at the flywheel by taking into account any differences in the 2 sets of graphs. That's a bit of an oversimplification but I hope that makes a bit of sense ;)

  11. I am thinking there might just be a few Gags coming about the new car and the fact that Subaru are now giving them away !! :rotfl:

I dislike Pistonheads with a passion (full of vain, arrogant, nobodys with opinions no one gives a **** about mostly). However, I thought this needed investigating. I had to laugh at some of the posts on the thread slagging scoobs off. :rotfl:

  12. I had a go in the new saloon STI last weekend. It's a massive improvement on the hatchback, unfortunately the lack of a rear spoiler means it still suffers from the lack of rear stability during high speed braking, that utterly ruined the hatchback for me. It's not as bad as the hatchback, but I can't for the life of me understand why the yanks get the spoiler as a factory option and we wont.

  13. Thanks everyone I decided to go for the dear option!! n get bridgestone potenza re 070 they come with them on standard and in the dry are really good just £500 for 4 ouch

They are scary in cold and wet conditions. I had them on my 05 blobeye STI. Never a dull moment in the winter . Good luck B)

  14. You have a PPP car by the sounds of it ( prodrive piping from the intercooler visible and stamped prodrive tail pipe). If you look on the last page of the service book, you'll see a sticker, which warns the techs that the top mounts will be different, if you have the prodrive suspension pack as well.

  15. Hi people im new to this and also new to owning a scooby infact had it a week.

I was driving her today and went to put my foot down and had very little power from the turbo whilst at the same time getting a loud sucking/blowing ? noise comming from the engine.

it only dose this under driving not while stationary and reving engine.

she is a 1997 impreza turbo 2000 AWD

    PLEASE HELP.

    thanks

Sounds like you've got a boost leak. Check the hoses around the turbo and intercooler haven't split.

  16. awrite fellas, recently bought a 2002 bug eye sti with prodrive and since have been having a recurring issue. when giving the car throttle on half or 1 bar of boost my intercooler warning light comes on and then goes back off again when i light my foot. since this has been happening i just pressed the spray button and it went away. However the light has now come on and wont go off and im not really sure which liquid resivour it is incase it needs toped up.

Any of you guys know what the issue may be and can i still give the car throttle, i dont wanna risk damaging the engine any help would be appreciated.

    thanks Meanie

The tank is in the boot, on the right hand side under a flap. The warning light comes on when you accelerate hard because what little water there is left in the tank is sloshing away from the sensor. Fill it up and all should be well. if the sprayer isn't working it's not the end of the world and there wont be any major consequences. the sprayer is a toy not a nessecity

  17. Daily drive for me also. The only annoying thing is the amount of door dings and scratches picked up in car parks etc that I have had to have removed. I got back to my car in a multi storey last week to see some little cocktard in a corsa pull up beside me, position the car skewed in the bay, then repeatedly bang his door into mine as he tried to get out. When I asked him "what the **** he thought he was doing", he told me to "**** off" and called me a "chav *****". Needless to say his wheel balancing weights fell off somehow, and I also noticed that the rubber from his windscreen wiper blades was missing. :D

  18. So I was pulling out of MacDonalds earlier this evening and hadn't noticed a WR1 pulling out behind me. I wasn't driving quickly as was just mooching along with the Mrs but he obviously floored it and flew past me away down the road, boy that thing can acellarate and boy it sounds good doing it! I want one!!!!

They look amazing, sound amazing, and are proper rocket ships as standard. The only thing I don't like is the pre facelift centre console, that is nit picking though I grant you :D
