Nick555 Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 When I eventually get over, I will need an MOT. Are UK MOTs acceptable? Are tyres included in the Manx MOT & if so, what are the rules? I have over 5mm of tread all round, but the fronts are worn on the edges. There is 5mm over 75% of the tyres, but the edges are my concern. Any advice please?
graeme_stuart Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 As long as your car is less than three year old, you only need to change to manx plates. (correct me if i am wrong Manxies)
heazille Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 As Graham says,if under 3 years old no problems, There are no mot's here on the rock!! If older will require dot test centre test, but again when passed that's it Ta Ta A Tired Richard an it aint started yet!!!
Nick555 Posted May 28, 2007 Author Posted May 28, 2007 Thanks guys, I knew about the 1 time MOT thingy. My car will be 3 years old next month. So I'll need an MOT in the UK mid June & then a Manx DOT test when I move in July? So to confirm, are tyres checked in the DOT test & if so, what is their position on worn edges?
cupradave Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Nick the Manx test is more like an SVA than an MOT, Oh and I am told it is a bit stricter than an SVA
dooahhdoo Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Not sure Nick. The guys up there are a law unto themselves and it all depends on who you get and what mood they are in when examining the car [:S] Two options are either get it registered now to a temporary address over here and get it changed when you move or just put it in for a test to see if it fails. If it fails they will give you a sheet with what it failed on, you rectify them, pay them another £25 and they inspect what has been done and give it a pass. Jobs done!

Hi Nick, How about a day trip after TT and get forms from post office and go straight up to licensing and re-register it? Save a lot of hassle i reckon as you can run about on manx plates over your side no probs And as nick says if you need a temp address you can use mine ok Ta Ta Richard
Nick555 Posted May 29, 2007 Author Posted May 29, 2007 Thanks very much for the info everyone & thanks Richard for the offer of a temp address. I like the idea of registering with Manx plates, I've been wanting Manx plates for over a year now! A little bit more info about the situation. The car is 3 years old on 11 June, a return flight on the 10th or 11th June would cost £264 + travel/parking at the airport, but really 11 June is 1 day late. A flight on 8th June would be £316 + travel/parking etc - it may be a bit busy. A set of 4 tyres is £600 (Mich Pilot Sports). In a visit to the tyre place last week, I was told that there's around 5mm tread all round, apart from the front edges (I have a Powerstation alignment). I've always in the past bought a new set of tyres, what's the situation with tread difference between axles? I remember something about that it should be too much or the diff gets messed up. If I bought 2 tyres, should they go on the front or back?
dooahhdoo Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Surely it can be done without Nick being here? The form is available from http://www.gov.im/lib/docs/post/registerav...urrentlyreg.pdf

Nick555 Posted May 29, 2007 Author Posted May 29, 2007 Hey this is looking good! I've just spoken to my Insurance co & they can do a cover note for 15 days. I just have to make sure that with temp addresses & insurance stuff that I'm not being left without insurance. Where's the special numbers please?
dooahhdoo Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 TBH I would just get a run of the mill number for starters and then sort out what you want later as you do need to get a bit of a move on with the application []
Cret Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 If you ended up doing test perhaps someone might have a spare set of wheels with good tyres they could lend you for the test if you're not sure it's ok?
Nick555 Posted June 3, 2007 Author Posted June 3, 2007 Hi, thanks I'm doing the UK MOT next Friday & I'll also go through the Manx test too. Registering the car to a temp address was going to leave me a bit shaky with insurance. Also, this house sale & purchase stuff can always fall though.. Looking for good plumbing & heating, electricians, drainage & roofing companies. Any recommendations please?
