Guest v8voodoo Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 My MY07 STi is going in to Walldonway next week for it's 1000 mile service. I've heard that a lot of dealers use Castrol magnatec, which (I hear/read) is not a particularly good oil for our cars.[:S] So I'm looking for some switched on advice on what oil to take along with me when I turn up next week. Do I go straight to fully synth at this stage or to a semi synth until my next oil change..? My old servicing place (Barretts Motorsport) in Canterbury aren't there any more, so I'm in the wilderness here. They used Castrol RS, which I now see is replaced by Castrol Edge Sport 10w-60. What's this stuff like..? Cheers in advance, Nige. [Y]
marky9074 Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 No they don’t, they use magnatec as well, or at least they did in January, which was the last time I was there for my 1000 miles service ......unless you mean Phil at Motorsport...not sure what they used there....<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> I am on Motul 10w40, which I changed out at 500 miles. My warranty explicitly states that I am not supposed to go fully synthetic until 10,000 miles (or thereabouts, will have to check) [*-)] ..... so I just ignored that. A lot of ESC go to Mocom Racing (as I do) and they are all running Motul. Sumo Power in Sheerness also stock/use Motul... HTH....... Mark
marky9074 Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Dooh, must read post correctly....I see you meant motorsport....
Dalthegooner Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 When I had a new engine built for mine I was told to change to semi-synthetic at 1000 miles and then fully synthetic at 3000 miles. Used a semi-synthetic from Halfords for the 1000 mile, can't remember which one. At 3000 miles I changed to Silkolene Pro S 10W 50, sourced from Opie Oils (Oilman who posts on here). Its a very god quality oil and comes highly recommended. You get an SIDC discount if you get a members number from there website for a discount as well so its all good.
Baz69birds Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 1000k miles. [] CARRY on like that & you will have clocked it before the end of the year...
Guest v8voodoo Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 1000k miles. [] CARRY on like that & you will have clocked it before the end of the year... 1000k..!!! Eek..! I'm doing ok though, I only picked it up at the end of March..!! Though I did have to make a trip back home to Wales in it which accounts for about 600 miles total...!! []
Oilman Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 In an 07 scoob the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 would be better than the 10w-50 unless oil temps exceed 120degC Cheers Simon
Guest v8voodoo Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Had the first service done yesterday at Walldonway. Thanks guys. They appear to have used magnatec, so I'll most likely get it changed out again before the 10,000 as I think that's a bit much to go between oil changes. When's best to drop the stuff out, I see 3000 mentioned above, would 5000 be reasonable to change to the Silkolene..? Cheers, Nige.
marky9074 Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 As per my JDM 'Vehicle Maintenance Plan' : Do not use synthetic oil until at least 12,000 miles. We recommend 10w40 semi synthetic until that mileage.
Oilman Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 What is the technical reason given for not using synthetic for 12000 miles? Seems crazy to me when 90% of synthetics are in fact petroleum based and not synthetic (man-made) at all. I cannot see any reason why you should not switch to a synthetic as soon as possible and get the benefits especially as more than 70% of all cars worldwide now leave factories with synthetic in the sump. Cheers Simon
