iain_ogston Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 My organic clutch is worn away after 6k even though it was supposed to easily handle my car's 350bhp. When the boost kicks in the engine revs away but the car doesn't accelerate with it. Think the speed at which the revs kick in under boost has wrecked it, since my engine is very free revving as everything is lightened (internals, flywheel etc). Anyone got any recommendations for a decent clutch?
WUZ Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 EXEDY Organic will do the trick I can also get ORGANIC clutches rated for various levels between 400 and 500lb/ft Exedy STI/P1 clutch can do the job as well but youo might want to factor innto the equation the fact that you'll want more power..................we always do! iain_ogston Posted April 13, 2007 Author Posted April 13, 2007 It's an exedy organic which is on there! Would it just be one rated for too low a torque? Was fine when I got it fitted gripped nicely but now slips badly under hard acceleration and I can't get the car to boost past 1.1 bar since it won't load up properly. Is it worth getting an organic rated for 400+ or would it be better to bite the bullet and get a proper plated? clutch. What's the ballpark cost for an organic clutch rated for 400+ lb/ft?
WUZ Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 I can supply you a 400/lb/ft rated clutch for 380 pounds If your clutch has only 6K you should not need to fit a newly skimmed flywhell so that's a bonus. I had one of these on my RA (420 BHP) and it feels like a standard STi unit. It was great Only upgraded it because of the 2.33 going in and we're going to run a "little" more than 400 lb/ft of torque Russell
alistair_learmonth Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 I put a AP Racing on my STi 6 speed but was not looking to run 400 brake, no problems and is still good after a year's fitting.
WUZ Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 AP ones are good but TBH.....It is as good an item as the EXEDY ie, if the EXEDY can't cope, the AP won't either Remember your 6-speed is a 240mm clutch and RA95 will have a 230mm Clutch, different total clamping force and area so it'll handle slightly less than yours could. iain_ogston Posted April 14, 2007 Author Posted April 14, 2007 Wuz The flywheel was brand new 6k ago too. lightened STi motorsport 5kg? version. I'm going to try adjusting the clutch in a bit first to see if there is any life left in it at all. Not too hopeful since I dialled the AVC-r down to 0.8 bar (i.e. about half! boost) and it was still slipping. If that doesn't work I will go for a new clutch May time. Have just bought a minter of an MR2 turbo so that's getting all my attention at the moment
JamesF Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 I've got a Helix organic clutch that is rated to 350ftlbs of torque and haven't had any bother with it. If you have already replaced your clutch then you should only have to replace the clutch plate as the rest should be ok which should save you quite a bit of money too. At least, that's all I will have to do when the clutch burns out don't know if exedy are any different, wouldn't think so. James.
WUZ Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 True - but the problem seems to be that the clutch is slipping due to the power levels on RA95's car. This is about clutch plate material and clamping force. Exedy clutch covers have a different "Clamping Force" to the exedy ones! Russell
