The Big Zapper Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I'm attempting to upgrade the quality of my stereo in my WRX, but I'm looking for a little bit of advice from the wiser members here. I've already done the headunit (Replaced the standard one with a Kenwood DDX-6029) and since I enjoyed it I looking at doing the speakers myself. I've settled on getting some 6510CS for the front and some 5012is for the rear with the IAP adaptor kit (I wussed out of the mdf route) but have some questions that I can't find answers to, so any help is welcomed. Do the 5012is need any adaptors to connect them to the standard wiring in the rear? In the front will I have to strip off the existing connector to allow for the new crossovers to go in? Should double sided tape be enough to mount and hold the tweeters and the crossover in the doors? Whats the best speaker wire to use (I've got myself confused with all the different types)? Is any extra waterproofing needed for any of the components? Sorry for the (more than likely) stupid questions but I don't fancy driving down to halfords with half the door panels off when I find out that I'm missing a vital piece.
granby Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 To be honest i would not bother with the rear speakers but if you've got them already then from memory i think they will need adaptors Yes you will have to change the connector, i'd suggest you leave a few inches of wire on the connector just in case you want to change back at some time in the future I used double sided sticky tape for my tweeters and they seem to be fine Use the standard speaker wire as it will be a pain to change it (tried to but gave up) No extra waterproofing but i suggest you put some sound deadening (dynamat etc) around the speaker and directly behind it on the door skin Finally how do you find the DDX-6029 as i'm thinking of getting one soon

The Big Zapper Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 Quote Finally how do you find the DDX-6029 as i'm thinking of getting one soon Its very good, obviously the sound is much better than the standard HU and as standard its got all that you want. The only downside is the less than spectacular user interface which looks a bit dull as you can't change the colours only the background wallpaper (you have a choice of three I think) and the IPOD connection is not the best as selecting individual songs is not easy. Other than that its very good, though one word of warning don't forget to earth or connect the Handbrake cable otherwise it won't show DVDs, otherwise like me you'll end up taking it out again to connect it[:@]
T123VOR Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 As above really I didnt bother changing the wiring- TOO much grief Sound proof the doors - makes a real difference Trevor

The Big Zapper Posted February 27, 2007 Author Posted February 27, 2007 After 5 hours (and some sore fingers) I finally finished replacing all my speakers and what a difference, not only are they much louder but the sound is no longer flat and muffled. Though I now hate dynomat after it gave me no end of trouble after it wouldn't take to the inside of the door.
vickyk Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 We opted for replacing the rear shelf for a Handy Andy (MDF) shelf. We do have infinity speakers in the rear doors which were running off the head unit, the fronts are diamond speakers which are run on a pioneer amp(never heard of them before but sound good and think they were expensive too) Took Paul over a couple of weekends to do, but the sound is much better, you can actually here them. Dont think you get the best sound fron door speakers. Plus he has now fitted my 12" kicker sub too!! so you will be able to hear me coming at the next met []
