Mate looking at spending upto £4000ish on a classic

I have a mate wanting a new motor and keen on a Honda S2000 but they are fairly steep in price and he is really only looking to spend around £4000ish.  I have suggeted a nice Classic as there are plenty of them about and bundles of fun.

Anyone able to give advice on purchasing a classic? Is there any years which are a bit of a no no etc?

I would imagine that should he find one that we would ask one you guys to come with us for a butchers. Can you recommend any dealers that always turn up a good deal when it comes to classics?
