lescazscoob Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 as most of you will know my scooby sport is up for sale. after all the phonecalls, tyre kickers and timewasters we thought we had finally got someone to buy the car. but a few emails later and things werent adding up? some guy had first mailed us to say that he had someone looking for this type of car they were very interested and could we take more detailed photos etc. so out we went taking all the photos and mailing them on. we then started to recieve emails saying that they were actually in spain and were looking to ship the car over (alarm bells started to ring) but we thought we would give them the benifit of the doubt. they then said that they would be sending us a bankers draft for £85000 which is a lot more than we are asking? and that once it was in our account we had to phone his p.a and transfer the money over so as they could pay for the carriage and freight cost. unhappy about this we sent another email asking why he coldnt just send us the money we wanted and the rest to whoever but we were sent a lot of different excuses? we have reported this to autotrader who we have paid to advertise the car through (and this is where he saw the ad) and explained and have contacted Fife Police. ithink we are lucky to have stopped ourselves as we are hoping for a quick sale to buy the long awaited turbo and we could have been stupid and lost everything? but how many people would have just went along thinking things were ok? so watch out and alwas think is it too good to be true? i will let u know the outcome if this is taken further.
Gumball Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 sounds dodgy. were they trying to launder money or just bump u? i would have taken the bankers draft for 85k and fled the country
ed-209 Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 That sounds like the old type of bank scams that used to happen from mid east countrys. it worked as in they send you a bankers draft, you bank it and the bank honour it while waiting for it to clear from the overseas bank approx 14days. you then transfare the funds since your bank says its okay. 14 days later the bankers draft bounces and your left holding the baby so to speak, as your bank will refer you to there terms which will have a get out sections for refer to drawer cheques/drafts/transfares ect. Your lucky.. always remember if it's too good to be true...it's a con. Ed.
fai17 Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 It has happened to me on EBAY too soo becarefull out there.
herbie Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 Yeah very common scam, you had a lucky escape. Are the Police doing anything about it? Good luck with a sale m8.
dan_jess Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 Its the same with agency calls when u advertise with the trader, thay 'apparently' have people interested in the car but want a 1 off fee of 100quid! I wonder how many calls u get once u hand over ur money to them! [:@]
lescazscoob Posted March 19, 2006 Author Posted March 19, 2006 we have informed police sending all the emails etc so hopefully they will get whoever is responsible but it is a bit worrying that this happens? i mean how many people have they scamed? we were lucky and realsied but for some they would just go through with it? however on the up side there is someone wanting to come out and see it!! am feeling a bit heartbroken but then again ill be able to keep up with some of u guys lol when i get the turbo. its rubbish when the big scoobs want to play and im left toddling along in the sport lol!!
Baz81 Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 I had the very same emails when selling my pug 306 before getting my Impreza. Sent pics got another email about transfering money like you alarms started ringing and didn't reply.. the cheek of it is that they emailed me asking why I hadn't been in touch.. Dodgy beggers!
