Fee Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Need someone to look at my hot water tank.....I think it might be buggered, but have absolutely no idea how it works anyway (you'd think after living in the flat for over 2 years I might have some idea!!!) Is anyone, or does anyone know, a plumber that could come and have a look at it for me? Please [:S]
wilky Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 There is a plumbing comany at the crossroads at Fountain bridge Fee, when I lived in the Old Town I used them, it was easier to walk in and get help than book someone to come round because as im sure you know if you phone they either dont turn up or charge you the earth for a call out. I got them through my home and contents insurance, may be worth looking at that and see if they have someone they use, or is the boiler etc covered by your gas company payments? I used to have that as well. Hope this helps. Callum W
Fee Posted February 7, 2006 Author Posted February 7, 2006 I dont have a boiler. It's an immersion tank. I have absolutely no idea how it works.....its always been fine, so never really had a look at it before. Now though there is only ever enough hot water for one shower.....and in the mornings I can hear the tank fill up as if it was empty and its making some strange noises too! I've never heard it fill up before...the tank is usually full and used to always be hot..... I dont know if maybe there's a level in it that's reading wrong so its not filling up properly What sort of call out charges do plumbers charge nowadays?
wilky Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Right, its the bit that heats up and heats the water, kind of like a kettle. or its the fuse or its the wiring. or the ball cock device that controls the filling similar to a toilet, plumber for that So you need someone to suss that out. May be an electricianfor the electrics. Can Adam not fix it?
Fee Posted February 7, 2006 Author Posted February 7, 2006 He's offshore.....everything always breaks when he's offshore! I think it must be the ball cock device...the water that's in the tank is hot...there just doesnt seem to be enough of it
KGB Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 As long as you have water running from the tap then its unlikely to be a fault with the ballcock on the storage tank, the cold water enters the hot water tank at the bottom and pushes the hot water out from the top connection. I would imagine that the fault lies with the immersion heater itself though it'd be worth testing the thermostat that the heater is controlled through ( all under same cap on hot water tank ) In my experience the fault normally lies with the immersion or its stat. Hope this helps!![]
Fee Posted February 7, 2006 Author Posted February 7, 2006 I've had a look for a thermostat but cant see one.... Think I'll have a look again tonight
wilky Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 There you go, an expert on ballcocks. Now ask me one on sport.... Fee " What is the capital of Peru?" Wilky"Lima" Fee "Correct well done" Wilky "Thank you".
Fee Posted February 7, 2006 Author Posted February 7, 2006 LOL Thing is....the tank sounds like its almost empty....I'm the only person in the flat just now so there's not much water getting used, and the tank is nearly as big as me....so I just dont understand how its empty.
KGB Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Fee, switch of power to the immersion, follow the electric cable to the hot water tank, normally there's a cover held in place by a single screw or nut, take this cover off, the live cable from the wall will be connected to one side of the thermostat with a seperate cable out the other side and onto the heater element. Might be worth taking the stat out to measure how long it is and getting a new one same length and changing them over, obviously depends how comfortable you are working with electricity!! When you are getting some hot water it'd suggest that the heater element was ok but that the stat was switching the heater off too soon. Tough to diagnose properly without being on site and unfortunately your 60 odd miles away. Hope you get it sorted soon, just be carefull with the electric!! KGB[]
fai17 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 I'm sure some one will come round in double quick time if you are HOME ALONE[]
Fee Posted February 8, 2006 Author Posted February 8, 2006 I've found the installation and maintenance manual now so going to have a read through it today I think I'm going to have to get someone out though......I wouldnt think that a problem with the thermostat would make it make such funny noises [:|]
Fee Posted February 8, 2006 Author Posted February 8, 2006 First line.... 'Any checks to detect and rectify faults must only be carried out by a competent person' hmmmmmm
