Sounds like you've got all the bits there. I needed to change the rear hubs too, don't think you should have to on a hawk though.
tomwrx08 Posted March 26, 2011 Author Posted March 26, 2011 why whats the difference, i thought all 6spd boxes were almost indestructable??
soundie Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Ah, well..um.. I think strength wise they are both good, but the ratios vary. the JDM one (as is my understanding) has a better spread of gears through 1-6, whereas the uk as a closer 1-5 then 6 is long. or something. better check with someone better than me though hehe. I should start putting disclaimers on my posts. (NOT an expert) anyway, you won't regret it - I went through two 5 speeds, and I've not managed to break my 6 speed yet! And still loving it 2 years later.
scoobywho Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Speak to stevie at scottish subarus hes done a few
arch Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Very surprised you have been quoted "silly money" for a hawkeye WRX box as they go for silly cheep money due to the different clutch set up, they have a pull clutch. Think there is a lad on scoobynet been trying to sell one for a while and cant shift it because of the clutch scenario. What is the code of your box?. From memory I think they are TY754VG6AA or 7AA. The problem is that I think the 6AA is the normal pull set up but the 7AA is def the opposite push clutch set up. If you are lucky you will have the push clutch as these boxes go for around £200 - 300 as they are a pain to retrofit to pull clutch cars. Can you check the code on your current box, also try and see if there is is a round plug with a 6mm allan key slot on the box, this is located on the LHS of the box just forward of the starter. If there is no plug then you have a pull clutch gearbox. If you are changing the box coz you def want a six speed then i would suggest you get a UK 6 speed which uses a 3.54 rear diff. That way you can retain all your rear running gear (hubs, shafts etc) as 3.54 R160 diffs are easily available, all newage bug and blobeye WRX's use this rear diff. This would mean you would only need the gearbox, front shafts, clutch slave cylinder, flywheel and clutch, linkage and propshaft and an R160 3.54 rear diff. If you go down the route of using an R160 rear diff you need to redrill the diff flange as the 6 speed prop uses a different PCD, easy job which takes about 10 mins.
arch Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 oops you also need the 6 speed starter and the 6 speed gearbox mount so prob best to just get the gearbox cradle thrown in which will have the mount fitted to it.
soundie Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 So I was correct! ..when I said you'd best check with someone else

tomwrx08 Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 cheers for the very helpful info guys, my gearbox code is TY754VG7AA. and its an 07 hawkeye wrx.so is it the pull type clutch i have then its ure fault arch for selling me that bloody vf43 i had a look at various options, spoke to guy who was breaking a GB270 but wanted £1000 for the gearbox as it was low mileage then spoke to stevie at scottish subarus and he had one from a 06 wrx £300 so was going to get that but after speaking to stevie we came up with a plan, i was really wanting a 6spd set up but wasnt wanting to waste a couple of grand so he knew of a bloke with an 02sti that had a ****ed engine, it was one of his customers cars and he couldnt afford to fix it,so we have went 50/50 to buy the car and i get everything i need for the 6 speed set up at a very cheap price compared to some people who are still wanting 2k and more for them. so he will strip it out over the next 2 wks and will pick up all items i need for the swap over, just wanted to make sure i was getting all the stuff i needed in one run as the scooby will be in bits waiting for the stuff, cant wait to get it done now,
arch Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Cool worked out well then. Although the synchro's in the early 6-speeds are rubbish Might be interested in one of your front hawkeye shafts or both if they are cheap
scoobywho Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Stevie will see u alright hes one of the good guys
