Subarstar Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Just looking for some opinions from you guys. Sometimes it's helpful to get other peoples ideas before you do something you could regret. I currently own a MY98 Impreza turbo in white. Fairly standard, owned for seven years and now covered about 103,000 miles. The bodywork on the whole is immaculate. The rear arches are starting to show signs of deterioration, but other than that - perfect. I've just put the motor through it's MOT and was advised that I need a wee bit of welding done on the sills at two of the jacking points. I also know of a few other things needing done just to get the car back to 100%, but with a bit of work and a bit of cash I can get it all sorted out. I'm just not sure what to do. Do I sell it (trade-in), repair it, or just start dismantling it and sell off the bits? If I trade her in I'll probably end up with a boring four door saloon, or a 3-door hatch, nothing you would look twice at..... (budget won't stretch to anything interesting) As I read over what I've just written, I think I'm starting to make my mind up, but I would appreciate your opinions nevertheless. Thanks for reading, norry.
johnnyr6 Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Imho i would keep it and sort it if you wont be able to get yourself something else you'd like. If you break it the popular bits will go quick then you'll be left trying to shift the rest. Over time you'll shift the bits but you'd need to be prepared to wait. Johnny
bobbyc Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 (edited) Get it fixed up Norry, for the sake of a few hundred quid, 103,000 mls is nothing you know the history of the car having owned it for 7 yrs & it probabaly still drives as good as the day it rolled out of the garage, I bought a 98 turbo 2000 new many moons ago & still maintain it was the best scoob i've ever driven. It won't depreciate any more & if you keep it you will still have it to break if you change you mind in a couple of years. And white is the in colour bobby Edited January 22, 2011 by bobbyc
thefastone Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Really depends on what the car means to you, but if it was me, then I'd just stump up and continue to enjoy the car that I love... as it happens, there's a lot of work that my car is needing just now, it's going to cost a fair pack, but it'll be worth it in the end...
Vimmy Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Hi Norry, I have a MY98 Uk turbo wagon, it had the same rear arch and sill rust issue's and while it did cost a few quid to put right it was well worth it. My wagon is pretty much rust free and drives as good, if not better than when I bought it 5 years ago at 94000 miles. Having now more than doubled that mileage at 218000 miles it's not worth getting rid of, plenty of mileage in it yet, even after an new ecu and remap and supporting mods to up the power. As has been said, you could flog the parts, but once the interesting parts have gone, the carcass may take longer to sell, and in the meantime you have no motor? I would say keep it, if it's not broke why fix it? I want to get to 250,000 and then think about a rebuild with stronger internals, so I'm saving up for the next 18 months to 2 years to pay for that..these classics just run and run... Cheers, Col
marko72 Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 (edited) I think you have prob made your mind up in the tone of the post but, if you trade it in you will prob be offered a low trade in price and if you dismantle then as said by others you may well end up with bits lying around, and you will need to get another car. So if whats needing done isnt too much then keep the car and enjoy her, after all we are just turning a wee corner with the weather and spring/summer isnt far off to have her all sorted and enjoying her. Subarstar Posted January 23, 2011 Author Posted January 23, 2011 Had a look in the Autotrader yesterday, very helpful..... Think I'll keep the scoob!.. 218,000 miles Col, you da man. My wee motor could last a while yet methinks. Thanks for your thoughts/opinions much appreciated. The car has always been more than just a means of getting from A to B for me. It's always a joy to drive her and to take care of her and keep her looking as best I can. I think the idea of getting something a bit newer does appeal to me, but I don't think it would ever replace the scoob. I fear I would regret it........

Far be it for us to say but I think you made the right decision I couldn't think of another car that would replace my current motor, I would be constantly comparing the 'new' one to the old one. Like you my car isnt just an A to B car, infact I go out of my way to go via Z when going A to B These car are easily capable of high miles, I put mine down to the support and help I get from Cotswold Scoobies who have serviced since I bought it...
**jay** Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Keep the car mate, 7 years is a long time, every time i sell a car i feel like ive done the wrong thing, you will know the car inside out and a little bit welding is nothing.
