Gumball Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 New engine with 400 miles. Keep it below 2500rpm for another 600 or so. Does it then need the oil changed at 1000 miles? Please advise
frank c Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 (edited) I wouldn't run it in too easy. I'd take it further up the rev range but obv not on full boost or the like. Just slowly wind it up rather than full beans, plenty gear changes early on rather than motorway driving. Some folk even disconnect the turbo to save being a bit keen to push on etc.. I sure it's along the lines of running in oil for the first 200 miles, ditch it for something else then nearer 700 miles put the good stuff in? Im sure everyone will have their own way to do it Chris so perhaps a phone to an engine builder or feedback from someone who's just went through the same process would be the best idea for peace of mind and a good strong engine in the long run. frank c Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 ps: i know Danterzo has just ran in his engine so might be worth contacting.
dan_jess Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 Pretty much how you said it Frank. Thats what Steve told me to do. Through the gears off boost, using the gearbox plenty. Running in oil for 200, drop it, same kind of oil again upto 700-750 then its ready for good oil and mapping. I kept watching the miles and getting to 750 took forever, done 990 miles now, those miles were a lot quicker haha. Ready for mapping once front mount is finished, car is on the driveway looking sorry for itself again.
scooby222 Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 depends a bit on what engine and what state of tune - subaru's official recomendation is running in oil for the first 1000 miles keeping to a maximum of 3/3.5k revs (i think) but varying the revs constantly then after an oil change slowly build up the revs over the next 5-700 miles i followed the first step but after the 1000 mile oil change it was full revs straight away lol have done that with 2 scoobs from new and both ran fine, made good power and never used a drop of oil
Gumball Posted September 30, 2010 Author Posted September 30, 2010 Thanks for the feedback guys. The good squirrel sorry, squiggle has just told me that I shold be changing it around 500 and then working it nicely up and down the gears until its ready at 1000. Then there is the 200 miles, drop it until 750 thing. I guess taking it easy mostly, with some light introduction to revs, with a nice new drink at around 800 should be good. Heres hoping
RA Dunk Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 I ran mine in at a max of 4.5K revs for the first 500 miles with no boost and mineral oil, then dropped oil and gave it half a bar with the odd blast of 1 bar boost.

Thats exactly how i ran mine in Frank, this time last year 700miles on the rebuilt engine and i was off to Port Seton for the full beans map!!!
Gumball Posted October 2, 2010 Author Posted October 2, 2010 Thats exactly how i ran mine in Frank, this time last year 700miles on the rebuilt engine and i was off to Port Seton for the full beans map!!! Right, After a run up north and back to rack up the miles, I am now at just under 700. I am going to book it in for an oil change this week. It has been up and down the gears plenty, 1, 2, 3, 4000rpm, 5 once and never dropped down a gear to woosh it. That should do the job. By the time It gets re juiced, it will have done about 850+
frank c Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 Sounds good to me Chris. Get that old oil ditched and get the good stuff in. Job done
Gus134 Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Yeh 850+ miles is more than enough, all you need now is oil changed for a good quality fully syn and of to Mr Forrest's. Enjoy!!
