quentin_moss Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Hi all I need to pick your brains, I been and looked at a sport today which I quite like and is a very good price BUT it has a problem on the passenger side front, the disc and pad are shot, really badly grooved over half of the face of disc. The car has a horrible grinding sound when driving but mainly when turning (seems fine when straight) I also noticed the inner cv gator is split but still has grease. I dont mind doing work but dont wanna buy a major problem, I think it is a case of new gator, disc, pads which I can handle but anyone else think of anything more worrying???? Thankyou
Nudge Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 (edited) could have a bit of wear in the wheel bearing, which would account for the brake disc wear, noise may be coming from the cv joint, only way to tell is get the front wheel up.. Edited April 29, 2009 by Nudge

I did jack it up while looking at it and couldnt feel any play in the bearing? Its a 1997 2.0 sport awd short mot and no tax and ill probably get it for about £550 so cant be too fussy I suppose. Just be good to have an idea what I have to buy so I can set some aside for the full rally livery again
20withascooby Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 could be the pin thing on the pads to tell you they are low gurners also does it when he turns and mine used to do it too
quentin_moss Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 could be the pin thing on the pads to tell you they are low gurners also does it when he turns and mine used to do it too Ooh yeah id forgotten about those things, I will try that. I should be getting it tomorrow so if anyone is bored and local to sittingbourne and fancies a look and get hands grubby youre welcome
eureka Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 got same problem its the bearing you wont fell much if any play in wheel and accounts for brake pad wear
j-k Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Q, hiya matey... would be a good idea to change the wheel bearings as a precaution. worn bearings can cause pad knock off....ie excessive pedal travel when you least expect it!! jon

I might have the steering wheel off you, also do you know how easy bearings are to fit? are they pressed in or simple push fit???? Everything I once knew has gone and I need to re learn
matthew_buckland Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 £550 sounds a good price, will give you a bit to play with in cost of parts, should be easy enough to change parts, cheaper to run and insure, be good to see you back in a scoob, what colour is she?

Hi scuzz I got it for £500 in the end, but big disaster, got back to sittingbourne, 2 miles from home and virtually lost all drive, now got very noisy front end, not sure what it is yet. On the plus side its green

quentin_moss Posted April 30, 2009 Author Posted April 30, 2009 oh mate thats crap, Matt said you need any help give him a call, still green will take gold very well, cant have pink:-) It has gold wheels but I was thinking yellow. Just gotta get the driveshafts looked at see how much it will be if too much or gearbox gone then I will break it for parts All help greatly received, Im hoping to tow it to a local garage tomorrow so they can have a look and give me an idea. It could just be a broken up bearing that has killed a driveshaft or something more sinister
