one problem i see here is the words you used WORKING RECON BOX and CHEAPISH!!

they dont go together!!

any box that is cheap is cheap for a reason and more than likely is already in need of refurb.

You have to make sure you get the box with the same ratio as your rear axle or youll be in serious problems!!

Depending on what's happened to yours, a repair of the damage might be more cost effective. Tbh, getting a cheap box is normally not the way to go with Impreza's.

THIS IS SOUND ADVISE :)

you need to check the transmission code stamped on the nearside inner wing tag...it will start ty752 or ty754.

You then need to check that number against the code on the top of the bell housing of the gearbox (adjacent to the clutch arm i think?) to make sure they both match.( in case the box has been changed before)

These codes will give you your gear ratios and diff size. The diff size for the new box MUST match your existing rear diff set up.

I hope this helps

will have to go have a look at the weekend or get a person from the garage to look its a pain cz its in storage on the eurolink

jack it up so that all four wheels are off the ground (make sure its safe!!) then if its 4.1diffs, for every one full turn of the wheels, you will get 4.1 turns of the propshaft. Or 3.9 turns of the prop for 3.9 diff? simple!

Trust me.. I am on my fourth gearbox in last 2 years ......... an I drive it hard at 340bhp... I have changed from a ty752 to a ty754 based box and still cant take it...

SAVE UP FOR AN UPRATED BOX....

I'm lucky I can change my own boxes, but I do have a spare ty754 box with a blown 2nd and 3rd if it helps in the recon stakes, any ty752 box is as much use as a chocolate fireguard!

I took one to Star transmissions in strood and they fixed 2nd and 3rd last time for 350 quid, removal and refit included !
