G.T. Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 the engine check light came on in my car last night when i was out at a party, when coming home from the party it didnt come back on but when i was driving to work this morning it came back on again. a few questions do i need to go to a dealers to get it checked out? can any garage with a fault code reader thingy tell me what the problem is ? Would the garage be able to reset the ecu if theres nothing wrong? Car still runs fine , will i do any damage driving it before getting it checked out cheers G
Maxxed_Ross Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 the light usually comes on for a reason, so it is worth getting it checked out ASAP Most garages have the equipment to tell you what the code is, but will usually charge you a fortune for it. Best bet is find someone with their own code reader and google the code. I've got a Scangauge OBD system and that's what I do. Saves alot of hassle and money

jodie typeRA Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 (edited) GT is it a classic youve got? if so you can check/reset the codes yourself Edited January 3, 2009 by jodie typeRA
thefastone Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 You can buy a fault code reader from.... Argos.... its in the book of Dreams.... http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7402742.htm And, diagnostic Scanner... http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/cata...ber/7402759.htm
Maxxed_Ross Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 I've got a Scangauge II fitted to mine. I bit more than a reader like posted above, but it can give 4 engine read outs on the screen at a time (I have voltage, water temp, intake temp and RPM showing on mine) and stick it on the dash somewhere as it's quite small and slim Quite a handy bit of kit. You can even set it up to show average and maximum speed, RPM, fuel consumption and a load of other neat tricks They go for about £100 on ebay but for the money it's got alot of good uses - plus you can read and re-set fault codes on the move
