...of trouble free scooby motoring,and this morning i went to start the old girl and got a funny grinding noise sounding like something is not connecting,put her in gear and tried to start,grinding noise again.got the misses to bump her and started ok,is this starter motor or alternater? any wise men or women out there with any idea what this could be?

No idea, but perhaps you should let the wife do it in future :D

i would say the starter motor isnt engaging properly, if its not turning over, but i would get it checked out for piece of mind.. unless your battery is very low & your not getting full power to starter???

Sounds like the gear on the starter motor is worn causing it not to engage to the flywheel properly thats what the grinding noise is when you try and start it, hope this helps and good luck! :thumbup:

Tony, did it start ok after you gave it a run?(no grinding noises) if it did then it could be your battery, if it makes the noise every time you start it than i would say your starter is fooked. :thumbup:

I'd guess that its the solonoid on the starter motor. We've had 3 identical jobs in within the last 2 weeks for the exact same thing. I put it down to the cold. All 3 jobs were rectified the same way - remove the starter motor, take it apart, clean in up and fresh grease where necessary and re-install. All 3 are now as good as gold.
