pmacFTO Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 (edited) I am taking the Scooby to Holland on Monday and need to change the brake discs and pads on the front of the car but was wondering if anyone local to me is able to give me a hand? I can't get a garage to do it in time and don't mind giving it a go myself (I used to do my FTO ones) but I am worried in case something goes wrong and the car is not ready for Mondays drive to the Ferry in Newcastle! Cue one unhappy wife and kids! Anyone who is willing to help for a small fee if I get stuck? I'll be giving it a go tomorrow but may need someone at the weekend if I run into problems. In return I can help with any PC problems! (15 yrs experience fixing them feckers!). It may be a bit cheeky but I just thought I'd ask! I live in Livingston. Edited November 9, 2008 by pmacFTO
RA Dunk Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 give it a go m8, i have zero mechanical knowelege as well and fitted new discs and pads myself without any probs a few months back
pmacFTO Posted November 7, 2008 Author Posted November 7, 2008 I'll be at it first thing in the morning - it was just if I get stuck or shear a bolt or something else I can't sort lol. I have the workshop manual and have the section looked out on how to do the pads (which look simple - pretty much the same as the FTO) but it was just getting the discs off that I was concerned about. I can follow guides ok, it's when I hit problems I'm not always sure how best to proceed! Also - do I just spray the new discs with engine degreaser (not got brake fluid cleaner) to clean the lubricant off them? Do I need to do anything to the pads as best practice?
StrikE Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 It is really a complete peice of cake m8. If you have the 2 pot brakes there are three 3 bolts to remove, if you have the 4 pot then there is only two 2 bolts to remove. Very easy to do. The old discs may be stuck on the hub, depending on how long they have been on for, a quick squart of wd40 on the old disc on the lip just outside the main wheel bearing nut should loosen it, tap from back with a hammer to easy it off. Fitting is the exact of removal. It will take you a while to do one side, when you get to the other side it will seem like it only took 5 mins.
pmacFTO Posted November 7, 2008 Author Posted November 7, 2008 Gonna pop up to the motor factors and get some copper grease too - I presume I should put that on the caliper bolts? What about the back of the pads? I spotted this guide: Changing Pads. Do the pads on my newage (it's 4 pot brakes) have those backing plates shown? I know it will be straightforward when I go to do it but I like to be prepared heh.
StrikE Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 Thats a perfect guide m8, cant go wrong........... twighlight becons now away to bed Hope you get on ok buddy

pmacFTO Posted November 7, 2008 Author Posted November 7, 2008 Well they didn't remove the nut - or offer to - they gave me very quick directions to a place in an Industrial estate which I almost never found! He is gonna charge £30-50 to remove it - needs to weld a bar on it then let it cool and try to get it off that way.. I just can't risk taking it as it is to Europe with my family in the car! Getting a puncture whilst abroad would be a nightmare. Still gonna take some tyre weld tho - or whatever that stuff is called
pmacFTO Posted November 9, 2008 Author Posted November 9, 2008 morning all - aye the guy thru in Falkirk did the job - dropped the car off, went for a walk, he called me after 20 mins and I picked it back up. He welded a bar onto the side of it then got it off that way. Charged £30 & saved me a lot of hassle so it was worth it Handy place to know for future reference. They are called MVS and are in Middleside Industrial Estate - but they are not on the ind. estate map and don't have a name above the door lol - just had to ask about. I'll check on an online map and try to pinpoint it for anyone who may need it in future.
craigdmcd Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 So now that is out, have you got the pads and discs changed?
pmacFTO Posted November 9, 2008 Author Posted November 9, 2008 (edited) So now that is out, have you got the pads and discs changed? lol - well, no. Mainly cos I am worried something else goes wrong and I don't have the car for tomorrow!! lol We got the other nuts off ok and I also bought a pile of spares. Spaceman reckons the brakes are absolutely fine for the trip. Just got a text from Irish Al offering to help too! I think I may loosen the passengers side and if that goes ok I'll do the discs and pads. Just in work just now finishing off the 2009 FTO Owner's Club calendar but heading home soon Thanks all for the help and offers - especially Spaceman for Saturdays help I'm very impressed with the Scottish Scoobies community today (more so than normal of course!) pmacFTO Posted November 9, 2008 Author Posted November 9, 2008 btw - what torque should the nuts be done up to? I am gonna buy a torque wrench so they don't get overtightened.
