Obd2 And Error Codes/oil Issue.

Hi all, I was trying to read some error codes from my car and wondered if anyone could suggest why I am not getting a connection.

I am using an OBD2 plug I got from my m8 and it works fine on cars he fixes etc...it connects to the PC using a serial port but he uses a USB-Serial adapter cable (with a driver for XP) and when I run Digimoto or ProScan it says interface unknown.

I am using the right COM port settings etc but wondered if the ECUTEK that's in my car is NOT readable by standard software or if it is locked in some way by the tuner who installs it. TBH I don't think that's the case as you'd not be able to get error codes checked or cleared at other garages but it's just a question so I can cross it off my list of potential solutions.

One garage quoted £50 to read and clear the error code but I thought I'd try to at least see the code myself before paying that out - especially if it's just something small. Luckily Hypertech are only £30 so I may just take a trip thru there today. The car is driving fine and just smells rich but I was told that's what it's supposed to do in safe mode. The other thing my mechanic m8 did notice was a strong smell of oil when I pulled away so he was suggesting piston rings possibly....would the CEL come on for something like that or could the excess oil be due to a sensor failing?

I use Delta dash to read all my codes and log through my OBD plug......

But you can use the diagnositc connectors under the drivers side of your dash board.

If the car is in safe mode you will only get minimum boost (should be around 0.5bar ish providing you have standard waste gate) and i believe you should have a CEL light up also. The car will usually run rich in safe mode as the ecu can add 25% more fuel.

The oil issue would not bring up your CEL light and the smell of oil is not a sensor issue. How much oil is the car using?

If your still stuck at the end of the month , I'll be in Glasgow at the end of the month and can run my DD on your car if you wish.....

I hope this helps

Oh the usual if anything goes wrong it aint my fault applies :D

aha...I wondered if there was a way to get the codes without the OBD2 - my old FTO was the same - just had to eart out one pin on the plug and the dash lights would flash!

Does this method work on newage cars? I thought I had read somewhere that only classics had this diagnostic method.

Just been to Hypertech and it's just my lambda sensor :P We had a look on Roger Clark site but they never had any listed - where else could I get one? Duncan recommended not using a universal one from the motor factors. I'll phone Nobles too I suppose. After having a Jap import previously, I have an issue with main dealers and their prices lol In saying that I have not tried any Subaru ones yet...so I'll reserve judgement :D
