2087 Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Hey folks, My 93 JDM WRX been in my garage for a while now, havent had a chance to look at the internals on the engine, but am still about 90% its a conrod thats snapped, So i got 3 options now 1) sell as a project cat/strip and sell 2) Have engine rebored (on the cheap as i know a dude that owns an engineering company) and put forged pistons etc in 3) Buy a new (reconditioned) engine, and drop that in (I would go with the later spec classic engine if i could, slightly more power. Now, what i am curious to see is, if i did either 2 or 3, would it be worth it in the long run? I may end up selling after its fixed anyway and gettin a more up to date version (possibly around an 03-04 plate. The new engines come in at around 800 quid, totally been stripped out, any parts that need it have been replaced, less than 22k miles on engine and 6 month warranty. Forged pistons etc seemin to be comin in around 400 or so. Any boffins out there care to take a stab at this one? Car is just sitting idle at the moment, and it breaks my heart every time i open my garage and see it just barely existing . Cheers
johnnyr6 Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 (edited) rebuild the engine and keeping it would be the most cost efficient option. The rebuilt engine won't get you much more (if any) money than the same car with a good original engine, May get you more interest though. Wether to sell it as is is tricky, you may get a grand less for it but the price of building the engine and your time may easily mount to more. if you break it one of the most expensive bits to sell (engine) is worthless so it's what all the other parts add up to and mind you'll have to spend time stripping it. If you really want a newer car my opinion would be to cut your losses and sell as is. If you like it and wouldn't mind keeping it, fixing would be the cheapest way. Obviously just my opinion. AlanG Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 I'd go for another engine to drop in. It's a straightforward job and you know what you're getting. Rebuilding your own is fraught with potential problems as you don't know what you'll find 'til you open it up. You say you're 90% sure a conrod has *snapped*. What's to say you've damage to bearings, crank, heads etc etc, so costs could build up. I'd look at what i could get for the car as is and what i could get for it if i put another engine in. That should dictate what route to go down. If the cars not worth much anyway even with a good engine, i might be inclined to just cut my losses and sell off to give a deposit on a new car. My humble opinion.
2087 Posted May 1, 2008 Author Posted May 1, 2008 i have advertised on here for 1500, goin by other classics i could prob get about 3.5-4k + for it wit a new 97+ classic engine dropped in. my pal got some annual leave comin up, we gonna have a peek in the guts of the beast, see what the final damage is, if i been lucky (slim slim chance) not to have cost too much damage, might jus b a fix n sell job dependin on figures. would love to keep it, but not a clue lol, dunno if its worth the hassle, could prob get a bit for the tubby and the exhaust. interior in good nic, and the doors/panels etc. oh, alloys are decent too, legagy black widow 17's gawd just tooo many things to think on
johnnyr6 Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 I think you'd be hard pushed to get 4k, you can get a my95 sti for that nowadays. Wether to keep it depends on 1 how much you like it and 2 what condition it's in. As for fitting an engine, it's pretty easy on a scoob if you've got some mechanical experience and you get loads of help and advice on here if you get stuck.
