luke_clifton Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 90% sure that my engine is at the end of it's life. Last night whilst driving home from work, it decided to develop a mega loud knock. The knock was coming from the cylinder next to the turbo, and the noise was moving up and down with revs. After about 5 mins of constent unbareable knocking (car idle, as i'd pulled over) though, it decided to just stop, and run fine. I have absolutly no idea why's it's decided to start this, I rarely bring the car into boost, guess it's just one of those things. I will get it checked out properly, but also going to phone API sometime today for a quote on a 2.5sti engine. Needless to say, i'm totally gutted.
luke_clifton Posted April 17, 2008 Author Posted April 17, 2008 I was thinking the same thing. I've heard a scooby with bearing failure, and it's sounds exact. On the plus side, my spanking new coil packs turned up just a minute ago.
luke_clifton Posted April 17, 2008 Author Posted April 17, 2008 Tested the car today, it sounds fine, holding back by masses (haven't taken it to boost), but seems to run fine. Thinking maybe it was detting on some bad fuel, or it's developed a piston slap. When i got home last night/this morning, i was absolutly sure the car was dead. The noise was just like someone hitting a spanner against the block. Very loudly, louder than the exhaust. Still going to save for a new engine, i've had enough of this one.
granby Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Strange to have the noise for 5 mins then it stop but at least you can fit your coil packs now
luke_clifton Posted April 17, 2008 Author Posted April 17, 2008 Going to put the coils packs in a safe place, ready for my next engine i think. I have no faith in this anymore, it doesen't feel strong at all, if i start modding with my current plans, i am certain it will go pop. The thought of trading it in for something newer, isn't far out of my mind.
Scooby Hoo? Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Might have been a blocked oil way. Happen on a diesel van that I had some years back. Done exactly the same thing, RAC recovered me from Chichester, went out the next morning to drive to the local garage and it was fine. Done another 50k without it returning.
dazzlers82 Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 you may as well use coil packs as the 2.5 will be different mate an my mate had a 2.5 conversion at api with a 20g turbo 800cc injectors an a simtek with anti lag an launch control think he paid about 8k
granby Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Just a bit worrying that it was from number 3 cylinder by the turbo which is the one that normally goes
dazzlers82 Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Just a bit worrying that it was from number 3 cylinder by the turbo which is the one that normally goes i agree maybe its worth droppin the oil an seeing what it looks like ?????
luke_clifton Posted April 17, 2008 Author Posted April 17, 2008 Oil is due a change at the end of the month, Should be able to see then. David@API says i'll need about 5k for a 2.5 conversion, so don't think i'll be bothering with that lol. But am thinking of getting a newer style sti engine with forged internals maybe. I've decided to either go the whole way, and get the front entry turbo, along with simtek. Or get rid of the car, and go newer. I might even put the coil packs up for sell soon, not even been near the car, or out the box, so would exepect almost what i paid.
luke_clifton Posted April 17, 2008 Author Posted April 17, 2008 (edited) Knocking appeared again tonight, but went as soon as the car got upto temp. Piston Slap??? Or maybe something less servere, like the Oil is knackered and not oiling all the tappets fully, until warm. So a knock that only appears at night, hmmm, solution... don't drive at night lol. Maybe it's scared of the dark. Anyone need a set of brand new coils, tested by API on the 16th of April. £235, £220 for KS members. Edited April 17, 2008 by gurnars

Looking at dazzler to be able to answer this what exactly would I need to upgrade in order to convert to 2.5? Was thinking about buying a complete sti engine from a breakers with a wrecked block and buying a 2.5 block and bolting the anciliarys from the sti. Edited April 20, 2008 by gurnars
