kevtheskin Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Hello Folk's Looking for advice on front disc upgrade on a MY98 S Reg UK Spec . I believe the callipers are the standard 4 pots any recommendations and what sort of price would be grateful. Cheers Kev
Linky Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Try to find a set of brembo's with Performance friction front rotors and z rated pads all round. I fitted them to my car and you cant get them to fade on the track, do this and you'll never want for brakes ever again. Awsum
frank c Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I'd stick with the standard discs and upgrade to better pads Kev.....your budget will determine what kinda pads your looking at.

I guess it depends on your requirements and budget. If its just for road use then i'd agree with Frank C. If your going to do any track days then you'll find that your standard set up will fade. Upgrading pads will no doubt give you better braking but i'd be aware of excessive disc wear that can somtimes be experienced. I hope this is of some help

frank c Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 (edited) You could always ask here for some advice Kev http://www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk/home.htm Or here http://www.asperformance.com/ Edited March 31, 2008 by Frank C
Linky Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 As Frank says Allan at ASperformance is very helpfull. My 0.002 pence, for the budget you have i dont think any rotors you'd get for that money would be any better than the originals. Let us know how you get on....

My 98 UK spec is the original 2 pot calipers. Check yours say SUBARU on them if theyre 4 pots. The 2 pots have the clamp side showing on the outer part rather than pistons.
kevtheskin Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 Hi Emoe. The mechanics at the brigade had a look and thye are definately 4 pots. Phoned Alex F where i bought my car and they said my car was just on the change over being a S reg?. So I dont know just luck I guess. Cheers Kev
thefastone Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Its fairly common for folks to fir the Subaru 4 pots to older cars, even though they never came standard... That you already have the 4 pots, that is like you say kev, Good luck! Oh and Emoe, the really new 4 pot callipers don't have "Subaru" cast into them any more, instead its now a Decal or something like that... I got some new callipers on my car when I bought it from the dealers, and the name was only stuck on... same callipers though...
emoe Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 AH! right! i understood the original brakes were 2 pots, maybe youre right there was a change over period. Lucky that you got the better brakes! The new brakes have stickers? must be another way of shaving money off production costs. I have seen some subarus come in with CUPRA brakes on them. and obviously ive seen some of the Grp.N models with Porche brake kits. Learned something new today! thanks guys!
thefastone Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 The Litchfield Type 25 has the Porsche Brakes... (think that they are an option extra for that though...) The other end mate, is the Prodrive 330mm conversion, like ive got on my car, or the AP equivalent (still 4-pots), or you then go up again to AP 6-pots...
emoe Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Did you have to go up a wheel size for the Prodrive kit? Im definently looking at doing my brakes as the next mod. Mine is running EBC redstuff pads, and srilled and grooved discs.
thefastone Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Yeah I'm runnong on newage standard 17"s and they fill the wheels just nicely...
thefastone Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Oh, and I'm sure I remember someone saying something about not buying drilled discs... something about them cracking easily... (which would make sense, the drill holes introducing stress raisers into the material...) but don't quote me on that...
emoe Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Very nice, maybe the way to go. Might look at some 17s then so i can upgrade. Was looking for the 4 pots to go on but cant find any sensibly priced

The EBC discs I'm running on the rear are grooved and "dimpled" - instead of cross drilled they have small blinds bored into them to help with the removal of gas in the same way cross drilling did but without the risks of stress cracks forming from the holes. The Prodrive kit states 17" min alloy size as well, and yes, it is the shiz!
thefastone Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Dont get me wrong, if you want the prodrives your looking at about £1300 new From Subaru (Hope you have your membership handy!)... but you will get them for less second hand mind... The discount, mean that I was looking at 1300 parts only to 1300 fitted... roughly... Think they AP 4 pots may be cheaper, but again, I dont really know the prices for this kind of stuff...
