Chaps,

A girl at work just told me she sold her car and was given a fake bankers draft.

Police dont want to know as she gave them the person the keys

Insurance wont pay out for similar reason.

Any advice or ideas on what she could do??

Other tips I have been reading are:

1) Get home telephone number of person and their mobile

2) Take Bankers Draft to bank and pay in.

3) Phone the bank where cheque was issued and they should confirm that cheque was created but not much else.

Its a girl at works.

It was a BMW but police reckon its gone.

I am amazed its as simple as that. In hind site there are some things you would question if you have some experience of car sales but we can all be caught out.

Nothing the guy gave was real including address etc. If you are selling a car, make sure you have a fair few chats with the seller first, visit them. Get a home number, check the car over fully etc.

There really should be more available to help people caught out by this type of crime. We pay silly taxes for police services and when it comes down to it, no one ever really holds out any hope.

Its a sad state of affairs.

What goes around comes around and this chap will get his....

The only thing I could come up with was that because she said it was on the red and needed petrol that perhaps he popped into a petrol station not far from the house. Say within 5 miles.

It might be a long shot but what if they have him on camera and he used a card to pay for petrol?..... We are talking about a 8k car so i would visit each petrol station I could think of just in case.....

I would be interested to see what response you get from the petrol stations when you ask them to go through hours of cctv footage. My guess would be not good. But its worth a go, I really hope your friend resolves this, its an absolutely horrible situation and she has my sympathy, but the (very) depressing truth is this sort of crime usually DOES pay.

Sorry to hear... never accept bankers draft or cheques when selling cars, cash or chaps only. Heard of the samething happening on another forum. I think they got the car back by, telling the DVLA what happen. So they didn't issue a V5 form in the owners name. Also reporting the car as stolen. Might have to do that with another Police station now. I'll try to have words with my next door neigbor who's a copper. Hope this helps.

I've banged on about cheque fraud on all the forums so won't bore you on here but basically, there's little she can now do. Police are the only hope.... ....cctv is a bit of a joke, unless the garage have lost money they're not interested and if they spot something associated with criminal activity guess what - they'll tell the police (who'll do not too much unfortunately).

Moral of story - ALWAYS release goods on the back of cleared funds. Best route is a chaps payment, same day, or a bacs payment (cleared in 3 days). But ONLY after the money is in your account. A bank draft is no safer than a cheque - even if you call the drawee bank and confirm it is genuine, one phonecall from the purchaser 2 mins after he has driven off in your car will cancel the draft.

Hope she gets some good news....
