frank c Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 Cheers matey. Will do. I took Alans' advice and went for standard front discs, ds2500 pads with some dot5.1 fluid. It's all you'll need for the road Kit. I phoned Alyn and got a set of pads at a decent price. Just didn't fancy shelling out £300-400 for a set of discs that I don't really need or just to look nice. Braided hoses and a brake stopper kit might help aswell and don't cost the earth.
fai17 Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 The best thread i've read in ages for advice and a bit of banter. AlanG has alot of good advice as he has done it and got the T shirt but have since sold his car(beast). I personally have the 6 pot AP with 330mm disc and have no negative comment at all and have done both Knockhill and Crail with no drama at all.....still braking too early for the hair pin but pure to be on the safe side as i don't want it too get out of hands. So make your choice and decide for yourself. If say you wanted to go for the AP's....Godspeed does a good deal on them!
boris b Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 Will just go for new pads on the front and change of fluid.. Hopefully that'll make it stop Our other car , V plate Puggy 406 currently stops better... The scoob never really gets driven hard.... well not by me.... have seen the wife driving it tho Just as well my brother in law is a mechanic and will do it all for a couple of beers.... Ah bless him.. Thanks for all the advice.... Didn't mean to hijack the thread... Tis better than starting a new one about the same thing i suppose..

You *might* find the 406 brakes better cause it's got more servo assistance than the scoob, so you need to use less effort in braking with the 406. Alternatively, it might just be the scoob itself. On mine ('99), my brakes stopped me, but the pedal feel was a bit *dead*, so gave the impression the brakes weren't any good. This was on the std Subaru braking system. I got a better brake and pedal feel by removing the bias valve which is situated next to the brake master cylinder. Removing this didn't affect the rear brakes in any way such as locking up under heavy braking or anything like that which might be seen as contrary to what you would *think* it should do, but it did give a better pedal *feel* and more confidence in the brakes. I'm not 100% sure, but pretty certain i noticed more *wear* on the rear discs/pads over time than expected, so would suggest that with the bias valve removed, the rear brakes were giving more of an input and hence more braking ability. Just a thought..
boris b Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 Thanks again for the advice. I'll speak to the inlaw about the bias valve thingy ma jig... When the car went thro the MOT a few months ago the garage owner ( good guy ), said that the brakes were fine... It's just that feeling that they have, as you said.. A bit dead... Mines is a 99 as well with standard brakes. A change in pads and fluid will not do any harm tho.
