Wheel Not Coming Off

Recommended Posts

Started getting a grinding noise on saturday from my rear N/S brakes, had a look and the pads were goosed.

I took it to the garage yesterday to get new discs and pads and they started work on it this morning. I have now had a phone call telling me that whoever has done work on the rear wheels before has over tightened the nuts. After 2 hrs they can still not get the feckin wheel off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In 20years my mate has never seen this on a car before.

Looks like that the wheel is gonna have to be burst to get the work done. Fortunatly i have a spare the same so thats not too bad.

At this moment in time i am seriously considering gettin rid and going back to BMW.

I am totally gutted.

Sorry for moaning guys but i am so pissed off i just wanted to have a rant.:angry::angry:

Neither have I and it sounds very strange. WD40 for an hour then use a cross bar with longgggggggggggg extension.

I have taken off worse nuts than an over tightened wheel nut before. Never heard of having to brake the wheel ??? to get one off

Can't they drill the wheel nut out?

The first 3 sets of locking wheel nuts I had all had to be drilled out....

they tried everything to get it off, drilling was not really an option as it would have fecked the wheel anyway. They used a very long bar but it was going to burst the nuts.

Anyway i think i have found out who did them last time the wheels were off. They shall remain nameless till i am certain.

Me and JohnS had a similar issue with one of my wheels quite a few years back. Although the issue with mine was more getting the centre cap off which was covering the wheels. It had an allen key to hold it on and once that was removed we realised that the centre cap seemed to be spot welded to the alloy wheel. After bending a couple of screwdrivers I eventually managed to get it off (actually it flew straight across the road with the force I was putting on it  ). Thought it would be easy after that but the wheel nuts were now covered in WD40 so made taking them off quite difficult.

Once we got them all off we found the wheel was fairly bonded to the brake disk/hub (you can tell I'm technical  ).

Made me glad my drive was on a hill ('cos that's why JohnS had suggested we do it at his house - was buying his old wheels)

Sounds like yours is a lot worse than mine though. I'd have thought there would be an easier way of getting it off without knackering the wheel though.

Surely the nuts/studs are cheaper to replace than a wheel though?

Meant to add, had they tried one of those impact wrenches as well... you know the kind it builds up speed similar to a drill and then "drops the clutch" to apply a heap of force to the nut(s).

Thanks Iain. Good to know i aint the only one thats had a similar problem. i had 5 of the wheels anyway and the one that was chisled off was corroded.

Still thinking about selling it now. Hopefully i will chnage my mind, i do love driving it.

I dunno what other scooby wheel nuts are but these were 12mm alan key type?

Everytime they put extra pressure on it the nut was starting to bulge as if about to break

Odd sounding nuts, sound more like locking wheel nut types than the std ones.

dont know thionk Ive seen these on a couple of cars recently, I think Simmie's car has them? (again - Could be wrong)

I was going to say that you should be able to drill them WITHOUT damaging the wheel, and yes, you should not inflict any damage to the wheel, but as they are NUTS and not bolts, that makes drilling a bit more tricky.... unless you fancy changing the studs too, and I dont know if you can change thoes studs tbh, someone will know better than me when it comes to that....

but under no circumstances should you need to damage you wheel to get it off....

Yes you can drill them out. Yes you can change the studs if they are damaged.

drilling them out was gonna cause damage too, the nuts are or should i say, were 13mm alan key type nuts, very bad design as some of them were splitting. i'm gonna post some pics of what they look like and what the whell was like once they got it off.

brakes are now done all round now with black diamond cross drilled discs and black diamond predator pads.

stops the car much quicker now, thats for sure
