My 95 Wrx Import Running Probs

hi guys my uncle has a my95 wrx import and he is experiencing running probs it is in 3rd gear going ok mid way up range goes to change into 4th and it splutters and he has to stop and rev it to clear itself before taking off again any ideas would help and be appreciated . Craig
