kaan_ors Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Don't wish to sound silly but what on earth are these pulley things you all buy?
baser999 Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Quote Don't wish to sound silly but what on earth are these pulley things you all buy? I overhead Granby and Hol giving a lecture on this very subject last Friday at Notcutts. Now I'm not in any way technical but here's a rough run down lol. These pulleys are the ones that sit at the front of the engine around which that long black rubbery belty thingy goes......with me so far? You whip these off - not easy apparently if you look at Tonys comments - and replace with lightweight ones. Now, because they're lighter, they turn easier hence less resistance and as a consequence you're using less of the power generated by the engine to turn them - more power available to drive the car along, better pick-up etc. However, because they're lighter they provide less engine braking when you're slowing down. Here endeth todays lesson in automotive technology and now I await being shot down or corrected. It seemed to make sense last Friday lol

I've read Tonys experiences and have decided that it's definitely not a job for me.
granby Posted July 27, 2007 Author Posted July 27, 2007 On the front of your engine there are 3 pulleys (crank, alternator & power steering) which are all quite heavy, these replacements are all made out of aluminium and all 3 weigh less that the standard crank pulley, the reasoning is there is less weight for the engine to turn over so it makes the engine more responsive, also helps if you have a lightened flywheel
granby Posted July 27, 2007 Author Posted July 27, 2007 Well done Barry [Y] Can't wait for tomorrows lesson []
baser999 Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Quote Well done Barry [Y] Can't wait for tomorrows lesson [] Just put a new sidelight bulb in, but guess most people here are ok with that so needn't bother with a tutorial. There'll be something along soon though lol

prodrive tony Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Had my first drive in three weeks today. Engine seems to be very smooth and responsive at low rev's [Y] As for the engine braking I totally agree as my close call with a brick roundabout will prove (that or my sh*t 2 pot brakes)!! []
granby Posted July 28, 2007 Author Posted July 28, 2007 Tony do you find with your lightened flywheel if you are in a high gear (4th or 5th) at low revs (about 1500rpm) you get a vibration but otherwise it's fine
prodrive tony Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 I think you need to change down a gear matey!! []

I thought the wheels were in each corner [8-)] Tell you what, I'm seriously having second thoughts now about taking up car maintenance for a living lol

[] Hi Tony Perhaps i'm just being a girl but wouldn't it have been wiser to uprate the crap 2 pots before you done all the engine mods [:^)] Its nice having al the extra power but its worthless if you cant stop, I uprated my front ones with a set of bremsport calipers and groved and vented discs and it made such a difference, i would definatley recommend uprating the brakes next [Y]
prodrive tony Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Got loads of mod's Skuzz but still have 220bhp and 0.7 bar of boost until I get the Apexi ECU. Could'nt agree more, the brakes are my last job other than ECU and injectors. My golf I've owned 12 years and has 335mm disks front and rear!! I have a brake fetish []
matthew_buckland Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Are you sure that is all the bhp you are running, my little unmodded auto is running more then that (hence the brake upgrade as i have no engine breaking). Would have thought she is pushing more then mine. Yours does sound good thou, we often hear it when you are out.
granby Posted July 29, 2007 Author Posted July 29, 2007 "cough cough" back on topic [] start your own thread if you wanna talk about brakes []
Scooby Hoo? Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Quote "cough cough" back on topic [] start your own thread if you wanna talk about brakes [] OK Granby, so if I fit a nice new set of pulleys on the front of my bog standard 2002 WRX with PPP bhp 256 approx, am I likely to notice any difference in fuel or power. I know that when the bonnet is lifted they will look very smart, um really must read the handbook to learn how to open the bonnet, but will my car go like HOLssssssssssssssssssssssssss. Ha the dvd is a great insight into the workings of a team. Very enjoyable thanks for the recordings.
