  1. Just to echo a similar thread. I too have now registered with an alternative local forum and will use that from now on. AS FMJ has said in another thread I was also just about to do a fairly long update on my own project thread but hey will do that elsewhere now. Shame to see this happening, big thanks to Baz for all the work he has done in the past with the track days at Kames, shame wanted to use them next year when the RA is ready again but hey wont know there happening now. Thanks also to JohnS for support and help over the years and some cracking pictures. Best wishes to everyone who remains.

  2. I don't really see the point in keeping this going or for that fact removing it as yet.

All relevant points have been aired, discussed & answered.

    Answer

    i·ro·ny

    1 [ahy-ruh-nee, ahy-er-] Show IPA

    noun, plural i·ro·nies.

    1.

the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.

    2.

    Literature.

    a.

a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.

    b.

(especially in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., especially as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.

    3.

    Socratic irony.

    4.

    dramatic irony.

    5.

an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

Now can the 'over moderation' brigade please step forward and have a bash & view their own personal agenda instead of lighting the blue touch paper & pissing off?

    Answer

Care to elaborate on this? I have no personal agenda and do not even know many of the people on this forum now. I posted my thoughts as part of the thread but seems that you have just given a classic example of exactly what I was suggesting!

  3. Some really good points Wilky. The days of jap 4x4 is far from over, infact I'd say reviving. I think its due to the point you made about afordability for younger drivers now, hence they're enjoying everything you guys did 10years ago.

.net seems to be less moderated, thus more friendly to younger banter. I'm guessing .net average age is similar to what SIDC was when it was in its prime, therefore typical of the laughs you & Chris used to have?

Question for the original members. Do you see similarities between the present .net, and how SIDC used to be?

In my opinion the fun police have moved into SIDC and over regulated it. Its nothing to do with the cost of running these cars or the economy. Take a trip over to 22B and see it thrive as well as scoobynet.

  4. I don't think I have ever been on SS but for me I stopped posting on here as much about a year ago. Very difficult to put my finger on why other than it had very little appeal. I had been a member for a number of years and always tried to help with technical queries as well as using my project thread give others ideas and take feedback from those who were interested.

Threads like the one below, as an example, do not do the site or club many favours, I read it and thought oh dear! Maybe I am just getting old but it really didn't seem appropriate.

I also disagree with the idea of not being able to sell items unless a member, I understand the reasoning and the logic. But for me personally it was the main reason to switching off to SIDC. If I have things to sell as I upgrade or mod the RA I use 22b and scoobynet. Yes you have to be a member on scoobynet as well but the exposure and potential to buy and sell is infinitely better than on here. In the past I had sold many pretty decent parts to local members and have given away many items as well but hey thems the rules as they say.

For me the only thing that interests me now is the track days that Baz started and also the excellent work that John S does with the knockhill track days, they provide an excellent opportunity for people to get out and push their cars in an environment where the dangers to the cars and drivers are minimised. I havnt been able to use them for the last couple of years as the rebuild of he RA has gone a bit wrong but I will be using them next year as they provide excellent testing. But its not enough to make me rejoin.

A service and the discount at Ian Grieves may tho lol.

  5. Yeh, sorry. Don't have a pic but it's wider than standard by about 200mm to fit the vans roof. It's been joined and filled, just can't be arsed perfecting the surface to paint.

Would think you would still need to fill the gaps where you have joined the sections, wrap would still show that.

  6. No idea I have been using them for years for any body work I need on any of the cars I have had. Just had the fibreglass doors and some other bits painted for the RA work always superb. Derek had mentioned that they now do wrapping as I have a carbon bootlid which needs some TLC and cant be painted so will need to be wrapped not sure on price tho. What spoiler is it profile shows newage wagon?

Drop me a PM if you want me to get you some contact details.

  7. I myself bought 2 sets of the wheels with RE-070 tyres. Ran one set on the road for a year or so before putting winter tyres onto the rims. When I changed cars onto a newage STI, I took off the winter tyres and sold the rims to Scott Robson for his track Impreza. I think it was Arch who bought the other set of wheels and tyres from me in new condition for his road car?

It was indeed John and they are still on the road car although a set of PF01 pads and one weekend towing to Golspie caused enough brake dust to eat into the paint finish

  8. Its the JDM 6 speed you want, not the long-legged UK cruising boxes.

I disagree it depends on what you use the car for. The hills and sprints up here the best ratios I have found are the uk new age 5 speed boxes I.e Ty754vnxxx. The lower ratio boxes need more gear changes = lost time. I am using a hawk eye 6 speed at the minute and it's not far away. I wouldn't go to a short ratio box for sprints and definately wouldn't for the bigger circuits.

  9. Thanks guys it has without doubt been an expensive and time consuming build this time, it has taken much much longer than I anticipated and been the most frustrating experience I have had since starting doing this. It has been a lot harder to move the car on this time than at any other stage but it will hopefully be worth it. The season is well underway so this year is lost in terms of competitive events. Hopefully it will make the MLR sprint at Kames and the MSA Kames event the week after and then use the rest of the year as set up for next year. The only changes planned for next year are engine and head upgrades which are easier to plan.

  10. Well its been a good few months since I updated this. Progress has been pretty much non existant over the summer due to a combination of work commitments and lack of enthusiasm. Things have progressed, all be it slowly over the winter, and the car is now pretty much mechanically finished bar some tarting up, cleaning and the bling bits to add on at the end. The main job still to do is complete the engine loom and get the car running and mapped. I also need to get the car loom completed and will do that at the same time as installing the engine loom.

I have completed the rear diff carrier and all it needs now is a couple of spacers to set the height correctly and then a lick of paint. It has worked out well and will save a fair amount of weight and allow a little height adjustment to the diff to assist with the drive shaft angles. The amount will ultimately be limited by the prop shaft to tunnel clearance.

I have managed to get all four fibreglass doors mounted and all the locks etc fitted. The rears were easy the fronts were a pain in the **** thanks Simon. When the fronts were moulded the various mounting holes were taped over so well that the positions could not be seen on the fibreglass door which meant a world of pain. I had to make up card templates from the original doors for each hinge and all the door locks and handles etc which proved to be very time consuming to say the least, but all done and pretty pleased with how they turned out. Just need to get the fronts off and dress the edges a bit and prep them for paint. I still need to source the front perspex windows and fit them but that wont be difficult. I was amazed at the weight saving here :)

The engine had to come back out as the adjustable exhaust pulleys had to be sent away to be modded. Thanks to Chris at CDF for his help with this.

That took a bit of time but was worth it in the end.

The pedal box is mounted and plumbed in along with the hydraulic handbrake.

The switch panel is mocked up with a temporary switch panel. The main job left to do is wire the inside of the car. The engine loom is getting there.
