RA_Andy Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 hey everyone, i have decided against increasing the boost, instead i was wondering the answer to the question above, from bits of information ive put together from various sites, you cant just 're-map' the original ecu on older wrx's. If Not, how would i go about sorting this issue out, as i am soon to have the cat removed and have a new airfilter fitted and would like the ecu adjusted accordingly to take advantage of this. i have noticed that the advice seems to be have a replacement panel filter fitted rather than a cone style induction kit, are induction kits that problematic????? Cheers Andy
Baz69birds Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 You can just re-map an old car!!! if you have had it decated & other little mods, its fine. But please remember apon doing so... your OLD GEAR BOX & OLD CLUTCH may not be able to take the extra power being pushed through.. So they may need to be changed!!!
RA_Andy Posted March 3, 2007 Author Posted March 3, 2007 cheers!! the clutch is only a year old, had about 6000 easy miles put through it, was considering changin the box anyway, when i got the car, the close ratio was fine, but im doing more and more motorway miles now, and i find myself plodin along in the slow lane at 60 as i hate the idea of doing over 4000rpm at 70!! for miles and miles
Dalthegooner Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 The ECU on an MY94 isn't mappable. In order to remap you will need to change the ECU. The original ECU should be able to handle a decat and panel filter (Reset the ECU once the mods are done.) although you will better notice the power advantage if you do get a different ECU and a remap. Don't get a new box. You will kill the idea of an RA. If you want to use it for motorway driving then a much better option is to have the 5th gear changed for a longer one. Its not too expensive and is a much better bet IMHO [Y]
RA_Andy Posted March 4, 2007 Author Posted March 4, 2007 thanks, do you know any companies in the kent area who can do such a remap?, also, how would i reset the ecu?
j-k Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 You can re map your ecu if you add a daughter board with new chipset...but in all honesty, for a few pounds more you could fit an APEXI ecu or similar. The Apexi will give you a much more flexible approach to future mods that you may wish to do. If you want a mapper in Kent... Look no further than Jolly Green Monster on here... http://www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk/ Do a search on here for some recommendations... Good luck JON
granby Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 http://www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk/ can supply, fit & remap [H] Beat me to it j-k []
Dalthegooner Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 You can re map your ecu if you add a daughter board with new chipset... Is this the same as a piggy back chip or something different?
RA_Andy Posted March 4, 2007 Author Posted March 4, 2007 thanks guys, think im gonna go for an apexi power fc ecu.........just clicked the link and thats what they do, which is nice lol thanks again Andy
j-k Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 You can re map your ecu if you add a daughter board with new chipset... Is this the same as a piggy back chip or something different? Yep....or Scoobyecu board etc jon

Baz69birds Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Before you do anything!!!!! ive had a word with a friend about giving my SUBARU IMPREZA UK SPEC 2LT TURBO '94 (coming out original garage with 208BHP.) about giving me more POWER. & he has said i can fit a JAP ECU Straight to mine. which is already mapped to U.K specs. should be giving my car an extra bhp+, & then maybe thinking about fitting a TD05 Turbo (i have a TD04), & if i have a big exhaust he said (i have already) i should be in the 280bhp mark!!! HELLO i said, what about £££, supply & fit!! about £500.
granby Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Hope he's not saying the ECU will be fine for the TD04 & TD05 If you fit a TD05 in place of the TD04 the fuelling is going to be all wrong as the ECU doesn't know you've changed the turbo, engine will run lean on boost and it's bye bye engine [:'(]
j-k Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Granby is correct, but also i think the uk cars had slightly different wiring at the ecu?? So this would have to be modded as well... I would definately get some more info before you take this any further.... Try Paul at Zen Performance or as stated above try Simon...Jolly Green Monster.. good luck jon

Jolly Green Monster Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 UK are all TD05.. JDM are all TD05 except the Wagon which is TD04 as standard. you MUST match the map/ecu to the turbo ! The new mappable daughter board is Designed / built but ESL and distributed through the usual places, myself included. I expect prices to be £200~250 less than Apexi PowerFC. The jap ecu you mention should be a Z4.. whcih does have a reasonable map in it and is okay on super unleaded but you are not talking a massive difference in power and will have the 112mph speed limiter on it.
