sandyRS16i Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Currently i have a standard STI (version 5) Type RA V-ltd which is running standard apart form a bailey piston dump valve and the center section cat has been removed. I have a magnex de-cat downpipe whcih i was thinking of fitting, but it has been mentioned that people have experienced engine problems and failures in STI V5's and P1's if they dont get them re-mapped. The car is still running the Jap mapped ECU and run on Optimaz and OB, will it still be ok with this if its fully decat or will i have to get it remapped. Any advice/help will be appriciated, or if anyone knows who the best people to talk to are. Was thinking of speaking to either AWD or Andy Forrest, are these the best folks?? Thanks Sandy http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/sandyRS16i/scooby2.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/sandyRS16i/scooby1.jpg
ANDYJDMSTI Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 yep get it remapped. Andyf should be able to sort you out
colin_ross Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I ran my version 5 with a decat and no remap for a while and it was ok. I added a higher pressure fuel pump and a fpr to give it a little more fuel to compensate in the short term but a remap is really the only long term solution. Do you have a knocklink or afr to monitor the engine if you go without?
sandyRS16i Posted January 19, 2006 Author Posted January 19, 2006 was actually looking into getting a knocklink and an AFR meter at some point, might hold off on the decat then for a bit. what sort of boost/power increase would i be looking at with full decat? if it was remapped, would it be a case of reprogramming the current ecu or would it need replacing for a different unit, anyone know how much this would set me back??
dave_morgan Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 You might be ok if you're running OB, but I'd certainly get a knocklink fitted to keep an eye on detonation levels. I've held back on decating my P1 for worry of the big bang, but am now thinking about a remap and decat. I personally would do one without the other (having had an sti5 go bang on me !!) Dave
colin_ross Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 << was actually looking into getting a knocklink and an AFR meter at some point, might hold off on the decat then for a bit. what sort of boost/power increase would i be looking at with full decat? if it was remapped, would it be a case of reprogramming the current ecu or would it need replacing for a different unit, anyone know how much this would set me back?? >> Mine made 320bhp in the above spec at Destek and had the flattest torque curve I've ever seen. A version 5 can have the original ecu remapped (Ecutek) or have a replacement ecu. I went apexi as it seemed to suit my needs best. As mentioned speak to Andy as costs may have changed.
dave_morgan Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Knocklink just appeared for sale on this forum - better be quick as they don't usually hang around long!!
dave_morgan Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Great looking car BTW... love the colour Dave
dave_morgan Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 << doh beat me to it kart man >> You need to be fast, or you're last !!
jamie_wood Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I had a version 5 STI Type Ra for a while. Didnt need any mods what so ever as it was a very quick car anyway. The next owned Decatted and ended up with the pistons out the block and an under bonnet fire. I dont think STI intended for their cars to me "Max powered" Just my opinion though
sandyRS16i Posted January 19, 2006 Author Posted January 19, 2006 << Great looking car BTW... love the colour Dave >> cheers for posting the pics dave thanks for the info, will now need to decide whether i can afford a remap or just stick with it as is for the mo.....
sandyRS16i Posted January 19, 2006 Author Posted January 19, 2006 << 22B style front Bumper ?? >> yeah, 22b front bumper and bonnet vents and 18" Rota tarmac II in bronze
