It broke...

Hi,

I picked up my new car on Thursday - an MY97 sti v3 555. It was great while it lasted, but sadly after less than 24 hours of ownership it spun a bearing and clattered to a halt outside Noble's Subaru dealership in Penicuik.

So, it now needs a new engine but I am stuck as to what all needs to be replaced, how much it will cost and where to get it from. I have a quote from Subaru but would like to assess all options before deciding what to do.

To say I'm gutted would be putting it mildly, so any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Merry christmas,

Brian.

I bought it privately so there was no warranty with it. The car is otherwise immaculate and it had only covered 40,000 miles so I wasn't expecting this at all. Thankfully, the previous owner has been great, and has offered to help. I'll give greersport a call after christmas is out the way and see what they say. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

That must a nightmare at any time of the year, but especially so at this time since everybody is probably skint, garages are shut + you only had it a few days!

Hope you get it sorted soon, and have many many miles of trouble-free ownership afterwards.

You sound like you are close to me mate. There is a guy in Roslin who specialises in building Subaru engines and could probably do you an engine for a great price. He might be able to salvage some internals from your one..............but don't hold yer breath.

His name is Stevie Whitson and he does work for some of the big power runners on here including Mr Forrest and Mr Wilky!

He has done wonders with some of my stuff and is a really helpful guy. Give me a shout if you want him in your option plan.

Cheers,

Chris

Brian,

Sorry to hear about this. I know the car well and I also know the owner of the Garage that imported it from Japan.

I am very surprised that this happened to be honest.

The car has been treated like a member of the family since new!!

As far as repairs go...I cant comment without seeing the engine first hand and perhaps striping it down.

The problem you face with a shell turning is that it will have contaminated the whole engine with metal filings from the shell.

You will be looking at (possibly) a new crank and rods along with a full set of big end and main bearings. There is no point in skimping when its down that far.

The shell might have caused the travel of the rod/piston to increase and cause damage to the head/s and valves so be prepared to look at extra costs for this.

Timing belt and new tensioner is a must as is a new oil pump.

What you must watch for is the garage you decide to contract the job out too.

If they are not 100% sure about the job, then dont let them touch it.

You need to know what your looking at when stripping it down.

For example it could be a MAF failure thats caused it to run lean and melted a piston. You need to know how to spot this and on rebuilding the engine and getting it back on the road again also fit a new MAF sensor.(just an example)

Things like that you need to watch. Many people have rebuilt engines and had them blow again due to incompetent workmanship.

Greere are a good bet as a few folk have said.

Shop around but take your time and dont rush in
