Laser / radar detectors

Right, I know theres been hunners of post on these things but I cant be bothered sifting through the entire forum AND as im thinking about buying one for my crimbo I'd like to be sure the one I buy is legal and pretty damn hot at detecting the bad guys!AND, wont be useless 2 months after I buy it!

So, is there anyone out there who would recommend a type/model or have any suggestions? I was looking at Road Angel 2 or Origin B2 so far.............................

Laser and Radar are due to become illegal, however, Origin B2 (I have) has a detachable Laser aler and is GPS so 100% fine. Road Angel 2 has built in Laser Alert but is apparently set to be disabled in an upcoming softare update (anyone know more).

All GPS systems are 100% legal and will continue to be after the law changes - the government have verified and supported this.

is there any that can be wired up to the front grill or summing and wired up to inside the car as opposed to on the dash to avoid unwanted attention

Hmmmm, so Road angel isnt GPS based?

I presume that software updates are necessary so a road angel will lose its laser powers (yes just like superman)? I wonder if the laser would still be active, although illegal?

I heard the rumours and saw in the press that non GPS detectors are to be banned, however more recently I discovered there is no truth in this, the government have no plans to ban them at all.

The bill to ban these detectors was dropped earlier this year, if a new Government comes in the bill may reappear next year, however it will take a minimum of 12 months to debate what technology to ban and another 6 months for it to become law. So we should be ok for a while! They dont seem to be going for the banning of detectors, mainly laser jammers which I thought were illegal already?!

Yes.

It's called a Target LRC 100 and it does a little bit more than detect lasers. You can connect it to an Origin B2 and run it through that or wire it up as a stand alone unit. If you combine the 2 systems this gives you a stealthy system and pretty good protection.

Laser jammers are not currently illegal aslong as they are being used for the purpose they are intended i.e opening garage doors or switching on security lights.

I have only read this but supposedly If a speed camera van reads an error when he trys to clock your speed this is recorded.

After a certain amount of errors they may come knocking on your door looking for a wee box on your bumper.

Have a road angel 2. I have pased many speed vans but i have only heard the laser detector go off once. I wasnt speeding and it was at least a mile away.

I was lucky as usually if u hear it you have already been caught speeding and its just to remind you theres a ticket on its way.

Go for a jammer and spend the extra on the other bit to work the light on front door of your house.

Any tool which "detects" whether a speed trap is active, be it laser, radar, or something which knows if a Gatso is turned on, WILL BE ILLEGAL NEXT YEAR. That has been confirmed by the government.

Anything GPS based is not only fine, but confirmed by the government as being something they have absolutely no intention of taking action against as they know it has benefits - ie. blackspot warnings.

I'm using a Classic Road Angel which is GPS based, with the laser attachment dongle. It's decent, but the New Road Angel or the Road Angel Compact are better designed units.

I also use TomTom Mobile GPS navigation and I have the speed camera points of interest on that too.

St3ph3n,

As I said before the bill for banning them was dropped on the 7th of April this year, all detectors will be legal for at least another 18 months if not longer depending on who's in power next year.

Laser detectors dont really work that well.

They do detect the laser but the laser gun will have caught you speeding before you have time to apply the brakes.

It depends on the laser deflecting off a car in front of you and the detector picking it up through the windscreen.

At close range you would need a detector down near the numberplate not on the dash board.

I recently bought a road angel compact for my old man.Easy to update and use at £200.I was quite impressed by it and might get myself one.No laser detector on it,but unless your going to get jammers fitted there is no point to them.

The only time I was caught for speeding was by an unmarked police car using VASCAR on the M8!

No detector for that one face-icon-small-wink.gif
