What brake pads?

Getting droplinks and geometery done next week hopefully. Suspect my brake pads will need changed too as they've done 12000 miles including a track day, and they're just the stock pads that came on the car.

So what do people recommend? I remember talking to teknopete, dipsy and some other guys at the last track day. But I can't remember what they recommended. "Red stuff" wasn't good in the cold is about the only thing that comes to mind.

Looking for good all round pads that can withstand a track day, but also wont need a prayer said before the first application on a cold morning.

I'm all ears.

I'd recommend Mintex 1144 or 1155's. The 1144 is slightly softer I think and i'm not sure how they would get on with a track day but both appear to be pretty popularface-icon-small-smile.gif

I'm needing new discs soon (4-pot MY '00), any recommendations ?

I fancy EBC turbo discs , any good ?

What are "green-stuff" pads like ?

I have a new set kicking about .

TIA,

im using the EBC discs too and they are great.

make a wee noise as you drive along cos theyre quite thick and the design of them must catch the wind.

but they are fantastic.

God you fellows are useless, now I have more choices than I started with!

It's between the Ferodo (didn't know hobbits made brake pads) 2500s, the EBC Red Stuffs and the Mintex 1155. Unless anyone comes up with another answer.

Will any of these be incompatible/harsh on standard discs.

What about my earlier query about the red stuffs, do they require excessive warming up, or do they work from cold?

just to add to the confusion Id recomend Pagid pads , I have Ferodo DS 2500 fitted and there superb but I have been told the pagids are better and less dusty ..........wich is nice. No offense but wouldnt touch the likes of Green stuff etc but red stuff had a lot of good reports .......... still dont trust em personally though. Mintex pads are as good but do take longer to get upto temp and squeal until they do. All the pads would be a bit harsher on the OEM discs and will reduce the lifetime of the discs.

I have mintex 1144 ctech and padgid i think it 8groove disk.Theres a difference in thickness between the 1144 and 1155 you get brake squealing on the 1144.Partco sell mintex because i bought 1155 from there twice. The 1155 were cheaper than the 1144 and thats md1416 four pot pads .I got the pagid disks front from awd and pads they fitted them

everyone uses different discs / pads and probably most are just as good as each other. I can only speak for myself but i rate the EBC discs with redstuff pads very highly !!! . these brakes took a severe pounding coming back from crail last sunday and i was most impressed with there perfromance. We come back the crail to cupar road ( very twisty road with some hairpin-like corners) and even after a good thrashing they still preformed some amazing ???mph to 0mph without any problems !!! face-icon-small-wink.gifface-icon-small-wink.gifface-icon-small-shocked.gif

p.s. --- st3ph3n -- with regards to your question " "Red stuff" wasn't good in the cold is about the only thing that comes to mind"

can't say i've had any issues with them mate.

i'm using DBA discs and tried the red stuff pads with them first, i thought they were useless, tried 5.1 fluid, already got braided hoses and still rubbish, hot or cold. I had no confidence in the brakes at all.

i'm now using mintex 1144 with no problems, just a little squeal sometimes, but only in reverse lol

I have upgraded to ebc red stuff brake pads in my wrx (2004 model) as the first OEM set worn out too quickly and suffered serious fade from over-heating.  I am now disappointed with the ebc red stuff pads as they are the same (not quite as bad) as the OEM pads.  I don't know whether it is because I am using OEM discs but the pads have been run in properly but smoke when braking harshly resulting in reduced braking force. On the other hand however, I have not experienced any problems with them when cold as some members have mentioned in this forum, but this may be due to my driving style, as 99% of the time the car is being driven hard and the pads don't stay cool for long. Those people who experience problems with the red stuff pads when cold are in my opinion driving to the speed limit most of the time, not giving the chance for the brake linings to warm up, which in all honesty, doesn't take much.  The important thing to remember is that you really want to stop when you are flooring it when the pads are very hot (at speeds that you know you won't make it), when compared with the speed that you must be going at if the pads were cold.

I have read about the yellow stuff brake pads and they are apparently stable up to a temperature of 900 degrees as oppaosed to 700 for the red stuff pads.  The frictional coefficient for these pads is greater than that of the red stuff pads.  Has anyone used these pads and how do you rate them?  What pads do all you scooby nutters out there recommend, or what do you recommend me to do to my scooby to eliminate brake fade altogether?

I would say that better pads without disks = wearing out of disks rapidly or warped disks after about a week.

For me I'd braid the lines first. Then disks, pads, calipers etc.

This thread is somewhat of a a blast from the past!

I ended up with the red stuffs and I liked them. So much so I got a second set fitted a month ago after wearing out the first set.
