corsa Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 I know this has been covered a thousand times before and yes i did search the forum thoughrally and came to one conclusion, everybody has different views. I now need two new front tyres and have narrowed it down to 4 types, what i am looking for in a tyre is the following; 1.I dont do track days. 2.I need a tyre to last as long as possible mileage wise. 3.I do drive quick at times. 4.Looking for a good all round tyre(no jokes about there being all square ones please) good in the wet as well as the dry. 5.Budget is not really an issue. I have considered the following; Toyo T1r Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 Kuhmo Ecsta Sport KU31 Vredestein dont know the type yet?
zeolite Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 I swear by the Goodyear f1s and they keep winning awards for allround performance. mytyres have them on special at the moment and I have just bought 4 at £64 each.
fai17 Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 if budget is not an issue i would get Goodyear F1. i wouldn't get ToyoT1R.Ask Gumball he went pear shape with his. i am really happy with the Toyo T1S on mines although i didn't like them on my G60 Golf MK2. Hope that helps you in someways....
johns Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 The Bridgestone S-03 is worth considering if budget isn't an option. Slightly better than the F1s in the dry (stiffer sidewall so less of a spongy feel), don't overheat so readily, and last slightly longer. Not quite the same levels of grip in the wet as the F1s (but very close). I've had both on my car(s) in the past, and preferred both of these to the Toyos (which weren't as consistent over the full tread depth and were also noisier). John
st3ph3n Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 No complaints with my Bridgetone Potenza RE050s, but I've never driven a performance car before. Have to say though, I've done 10500 miles so far and with the exception of the shoulder of the passenger side front tyre (KH Track day damage, IT WAS MELTING!) they are still in fantastic condition and should have plenty of miles left. I don't push my car to the limits on the road, but I don't hang about either. I used to be able to get 10-11K out of a set of front tyres on my Vectra no matter what I used, so getting this far is a complete bonus for me!
RS Grant Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Another supporter for Goodyear Eagle F1's here.... In the dry, IMO they are as grippy as the others you've mentioned easily, but in the wet, they seem to get better!! Cheers, Grant
clutdav Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 What about the Pirelli P Zero Nero. I have these on my prodrive alloys and they are fantastic. Not cheap but they last and give great grip in both the wet and dry. SOmething to think about............. Dave
RS Grant Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Never had experience with the Nero's but I have a set of P-Zero's fitted to my MY99 and they were average at best..... fitted a pair of front F1's and drove that night before going down the next day to get the rears replaced for F1's. It was raining, and the back end was snapping out badly at around 20mph with lifting off and a slight flick of the wheel. Cheers, Grant

Like you I don't overpush, but don't hang about. Ordered a set of F1's from Jim today. £356 fitted.
ScoobyAndy Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 id go with the eagle f1'S as well one of the best tyres ive driven for a long time. grips like hell and doesnt let go Try VIKING international i use them alot and must say theyre pretty good with theyre prices.
Stiks Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Got the Eagle F1's on mine from Mr Dickson. massive improvement on the dealer fitted RE040's. Living in Scotland a good wet weather tyre is a neccessity, not a nice to have Keith
zeolite Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 AndyWRX....My pm out doesn't work so I will answer you here. Mine were 16" and were £64 each from the website.

andy Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 << AndyWRX....My pm out doesn't work so I will answer you here. Mine were 16" and were £64 each from the website. >> Cheers. I'm 17" Phoned Jim and got what I consider a good price. Dunno if it was him who answered the phone, but whoever it was was obviously dead chuffed when I said I was calling because they'd been recommened to me by guys at the SIDC.
corsa Posted July 21, 2005 Author Posted July 21, 2005 Looks like the goodyears are a snakes bawhair in front, will make a few more calls and then decide. Lots of different views and opinions here i may add
irish al Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 Can anyone advise if all tyres should wear equally. There car is a wrx and has bridgestone potenza on all four. The back two are at the legal limit, however the front two are only half worn. The car has only done 23000 miles. These now need to be replaced, should I change all four, and should all four tyres be the same type.
andy Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 << Looks like the goodyears are a snakes bawhair in front, will make a few more calls and then decide. >> Whoever it was I spoke to at Dickson's, I said it was my first tyre change and said I'd had conflicting recommendations on the F1's and the Proxes. The guy said he ran Proxes himself (no car make mentioned) and they were a good tyre, but between them and the F1, recommended the Goodyears. I don't think that was out of a "we'll make more money on Goodyears" thing either. He seemed genuine on it. The conversation ended with "See you next Thursday - I'll have the coffee on". I liked that touch.
chesney Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 I'd go with the F1's. Got a set on the front of my golf and can safely say they are ggod in the wet. I moan a lot about how dull the golf is to drive but on a wet road I now have more grip on the front so can actually get a bit sideways in it. Has Bridgestones on the rear which I thought were pretty good but the F1's have the edge. Had Continentals on my 306 rallye and they were great allround too.
