gordon_kerr Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 I've just picked it up along with a ninja mid section pipe ( many thanks to Jamie for organising) , the car is at the garage just now getting it fitted so i am with a car for the next 3 hours, the anticipation of what it will sound like is killing me. Does anyone have this system on their car just now and if so can they tell me how they feel it performs. Also as my car still has all 3 cats obviously this wont release the full potential of the exhaust so can i expect a noticeable difference from the stantard sti tailpipe i had on the car, i hear the vortex has a real deep rumble on start up rising to a howl under high revs, is this still the case with all cats still intact? I will be going down the full decat road in the next few months but i was just wondering if anyone can give me any indicators before i pick the car up. Regards, Gordon
Gumball Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 i had that back box before on my old wrx, and it was a fantastic sounding device!! Not too lou like the blitz for instance, but still a mega rumble which hushed up at 80plus also. I think karps has got the same too
gordon_kerr Posted March 31, 2005 Author Posted March 31, 2005 Cheers mate, did your old wrx have the cats in place? Any more info on this would be really appreciated
Gumball Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 mine did. i didnt get round to the decat before the big-end blew on the m9. karps hasnt taken is off either to the best of my memory, unless hes done it now? definately a good buy though. money well spent......
gordon_kerr Posted March 31, 2005 Author Posted March 31, 2005 Bad news from the garage, the ninja middle pipe needed a bit of modding regarding the hanging bracket, that has been done and is fitted, however when the vortex is connected to it , the overall length is 6 inches too long, looks like they may need to trim 6 inches of the backbox to get it fitted, has anyone with a my02 wrx had this happen to them and how did they resolve it? thanks Gordon
gordon_kerr Posted March 31, 2005 Author Posted March 31, 2005 Geez, not even going to get the car back today
Don Mega Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 I've got the vortex system on my car, with the Afterburner center and de-cat pipe. Sounds awesome!! i've only got a sport, but it still has a great rumble when starting up and nice burble when ticking over. Its really loud inside the car to though... even when cruising.. but then i have the full de-cat, so not sure how loud it would be with the cats still on. not sure what it sounds like outside the car. Anyone at the mad march run hear it?? I noticed a slight difference in performance after it was fitted, mainly around the mid-range.. it seemed to pick up a bit quicker and was slighty more responsive. Combined with the green panel filter though it makes a noticable difference for sure. Only downside for me was that it never came with any bolts or gaskets, luckily i managed to get a hold of some cheap, cos subaru wanted about 15 quid for one gasket!! Hope thats of some help Ps.. you cant help but dip the clucth and give some revs for a tunnel it leaves you grinning from ear to ear!
gordon_kerr Posted March 31, 2005 Author Posted March 31, 2005 They are definitely going to have to trim 6 inches off the flange end of the backbox and reweld it to make the two pieces fit together, not sure of the potential consequences this may cause, there must be some petrol heads on here who can advise or warn me of potential outcomes. Don , what is the purpose of the green panel filter please?
Don Mega Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 You shouldn't have to trim anything at all unless you have ordered the wrong part for the model of your scoob. The vortex back box and ninja centre should fit together without any complaints. If the garage is telling you otherwise, there talkin sh*t... the length for the turbo centre and bb is different from the sport, i had to buy sport specific centre and bb, the bore is also different. No cutting should be required if they are the right parts. The purpose of the green panel filter is to replace the standard restrictive paper element.. To help the car breathe better. Generally the more air that gets into the car the better. however warm air is no good... which is why a lot of people just replace the filter, filter elements are protected by the air box and dont suck in warm air from the engine bay.... like a lot of induction kits do. Saying that you can get heat shields for some induction kits You can buy the green panel filter for about 45 quid.. and they last for ages, so go buy one dude.
sheep Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 I agree with the above, i have the afterburner back box fitted to the original center pipe and there was no problems at all it was a 20 minute job. It sounds like one or more of the parts are wrong. It sound amazing, but i dont know if my neighbours would agree.
Don Mega Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 My neighbours sure dont agree only one has actually complained though, needless to say an old fart
sheep Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 I havent had any complaints of yet but i am starting at 5.30 next week for seven days so i will wait and see what happens but i am lucky there are no old farts near me.
SEEVERS Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Don,i followed you for a while on Sunday before i passed you on the long downhill straight, your zorst sounded superb,i even put my window down for a bit to see if i could hear it over mine. My missus was impressed when we passed you and she realised it was a 2.0 sport you were driving. Del. p.s....we were in the Dark Blue Mica Bugeye Saloon.....Morrettes.....5"zorst....
gordon_kerr Posted April 1, 2005 Author Posted April 1, 2005 i Bought this exhaust system as new from a friend of Jamie's who had a classic, this is why we are having problems, the my 02 is a different fit altogether, the guys in the garage ( and there was 6 of them all agreed on it) clearly the classic system is different , i just assumed the vortex was a standard fit for all impreza turbo's. Thank you for info on Panel Filter Don, although £40 for a bit of green paper sounds a bit extreme when you can get it at Easter road for free, and yes Don your right once again the bore is different, what is going in my favour is that the ninja and vortex fit perfectly although i never got a gasket to fit the kit, the guys are using paste for a temporary fix, does this have any implications? The big question that nobody has answered is.............. will taking 6 inches off the connecting pipe between ninja and vortex ( from the vortex end) have any detremental effects? 11 hours ago i was really excited, now i am getting severly pi**ed off and rather concerned to be honest
Don Mega Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Cheers Del, its good to get comments like that I remember you passing me, might even have it on film lol. its one sweet bugeye you've got. See ya at the highland run, cant wait. Dennis.
Don Mega Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Jambo.. I never realised you had an 02 car... i saw the pic of the classic and assumed thats what u had. I never got any gaskets or that either, you can order them from subaru, but they'll set you back about 10 or 15 quid. Paste should do the trick though i think, as long as there is a good seal. As for the cutting, i cant see why it would have any negative effects, if its just part of the hollow piping your cutting. You should be fine if its a good job and the gusset thing is welded back on properly. Let us know how you get on. D.
gordon_kerr Posted April 1, 2005 Author Posted April 1, 2005 Don , Thank you again for your comments, somehow i feel reassured, i have loads of pics of my car lying about, i must change the avatar, what did shock me today when i picked the system up is just how large that tailpipe is.......its bloody massive!!!!!!!!!!! more like a bus exhaust lol
Don Mega Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 no probs. lol yeah its a 4.5 inch tailpipe.. it will be well worth the wait when you've got it all sorted mate.. worth all the hassle, it sounds awesome. D.
SEEVERS Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Gordon, did you get your Prodrive gearknob yet..? Del.
gordon_kerr Posted April 1, 2005 Author Posted April 1, 2005 Not yet Del, however Jamie is sorting it out, i was about to offer you £65 for yours that day lol
