Thomohawk Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Alright folks!! Managed to bust one of my locking wheel nuts (and key) yesterday and now I'm stck with a mangled nut on the car.... went to a well known tyre fitter for some advice (hoping he'd sort me out there and then ) but they were totally useless and told me to go to Halfords for a locking wheel nut remover, went down and got what they told me, only for the useless kn0b to turn round and tell me he wouldnae be able to do today....... probably something to do with the fact it was 15.15 and they closed at 16.00!! Anyway, had a look at it myself only to find the remover doesn't fit..... so back to Halfords to be told that's all they've got. Kinda thought it was a bit strange that he never asked about the size of the nut!! I've been on the phone to Subaru this morning for a new key and replacement nut.... but anyone got any good suggestions as to how I'm gonna get the current one off? Cheers guys. Thomo.
ANDYJDMSTI Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 were the nuts on the car when u got it or did u put them on????? just wondering if anyone else may have a key that fits, i have nuts from scoobyworld. good luck
Thomohawk Posted December 6, 2004 Author Posted December 6, 2004 << were the nuts on the car when u got it or did u put them on????? just wondering if anyone else may have a key that fits >> Alright m8, na they're the standard nuts that were on the car when I got it. But wouldnae fancy trying someone else's key incase it gets damaged. Tomo.
ANDYJDMSTI Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 fair point mate. hope u get it sorted soon
Hepy Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Get a socket that doesnt quite fit over the nut, and then with the aid of a BIG hammer make it fit Then undo the nut with the socket. Disclaimer: I've never tried it so don't blame me lol
WUZ Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Hepy - I've had to do this to customers cars many a time! easiest way is as above! Russell
Thomohawk Posted December 6, 2004 Author Posted December 6, 2004 << Get a socket that doesnt quite fit over the nut, and then with the aid of a BIG hammer make it fit >> Sounds like this is the way forward!! Cheers guys.
Thomohawk Posted December 6, 2004 Author Posted December 6, 2004 << watch those rims though!!!! >> Now that you've said that I'll probably make a dug's dinner of it!!

Disclaimer: I've never tried it so don't blame me lol >> I've heard of this method as well. If the nut is just too tight get a blow torch on it for a few minutes and it'll expand a little, then when it cools it'll be rock solid. Just make sure you don't want to use the socket again and don't burn your fingers. PS2
Rice Rocket Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 I used a hammer and a chisel to turn mine when it happened to me, but I had enough space on my alloys to do that. Ricey
Thomohawk Posted December 6, 2004 Author Posted December 6, 2004 << I used a hammer and a chisel to turn mine when it happened to me >> I almost went down that route lastnight..... think I should have enough space around the nut to get a chisel on it. Before the nut and key gave up the ghost I'm sure I losened the locking nut slightly and so hopefully will come off without too much hassle - might look out an old chisel tonight! Thomo.
spooks Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 Defo the route of hammer and slightly smaller socket depending on the type of nut you have, if this doesnt work then its drill the off................extremely hard work. I admit it takes a lot of nerve to hit the socket on but it does work. Spooks Disclaimer just in case......I didnt tell you to do it Good luck with it matey.
p1ggm Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 i reccomend an impact socket fae snap on works every time
