How To Get Wastegate Chatter

Recommended Posts

I've got a Typhoon induction on my 08 STi and you hear a flutter under hard acceleration and a very loud pssssssht on lift off.

However, this seems to only be audible inside the car - cos when the missus was videoing from trackside at Knockhill the other day all you could hear was exhaust and no flutter or pssssht.

i have the inner wing induction on mine and get both sounds all the time every gear it get a bit much after a while

NEVER! :icon_joker:

Even the missus told me recently she likes the sound now!

I find it a good way to tell how much fuel I'm using... louder weeesssssshhhh = more money to Mr Shell.

It's turbo stall.

Basically when you lift off the throttle after being on boost it traps the pressure between the throttle body butterfly and the turbo. The pressure causes the turbo to slow down which is the noise you hear.

Here endith my lesson :D

Granted it is bad for the turbo.

But how would it increase lag?

Based purely on my common sense, if you stall the turbo you've slowed the turbine speed, therefore to get back on boost you need to get the turbo spinning up again which requires exhaust gasses flowing through the turbo. This means you've got to wait for the revs to increase which in turn gets exhaust gasses flowing which then gets the turbine back up to speed and then you'll get your boost back.

Right we're on two different paths here. DV delete stalls the turbo and will cause lag all be it not very much.

To get "wastegate chatter" one just needs to get an induction kit and have the car mapped to suit.
