soundie
Hi all, currently looking at my next round for the scooby and need some opinions, specifically on the Hyperflow top mount vs sti 7/8 top mount intercoolers ...I say specifically, just because I don't want a Front mount vs. Top mount discussion - i've read every word there is to read about F/M vs T/M and [stern face] I'm going for top mount [/stern face]. Ok, so its a 99 classic so it just has the stinking wee black wrx intercooler just now, and the upgrade is to support other mods, all pretty focussed on throttle response. I'm not chasing any figures, but to quantify, I don't plan to go past like 370ish. So my question is - hyperflow - what is all the fuss about I know they look (and are) very well made etc but really, do they justify spending 700 quid, compared to circa 150 for an sti8 one I also notice the classic hyperflow tmic's are smaller then the newage hyperflow tmic's. Anyone ever levered a Newage Hyperflow into a classic before? I suppose having the smaller classic one would cause less hassle fashioning an undertray for the bonnet scoop, but I think for that cash I'd like the mahoosive neage one, as a centre peice, if you will. Its going to be AWD Motorsport that fits it all, so installation hassle will only affect me in terms of labour costs. Thanks all!! Chris. Link to comment
cullenmin
I'd personally go for the newage STi top mount, it'll handle the power your after and it'll still have a relatively standard look to the engine bay. Dont know cost difference, I suppose that may swing your decision too. Rich Link to comment
DR Motosport
I wouldn't think you could get a new-age Hyperflow to fit a classic car. Fitted a hyperflow to a customers 2006 WRX last month, and it doesn't leave much space. Width is fine, depth was ok, but it was the extra thickness that made it tight. It's 3" thick, a good bit more than the STi 8 intercooler. It left no room for the strut brace to be refitted, and the original plan was to use a STi 8 undertray, but even that needed chopped to fit. For the hyperflow you will also need to buy the Y-piece and correct hoses. If you buy an STi 8, it will may/probably come with all that anyway. You could gain an extra few bhp, but whether the extra cost is worth it, that's up to you. Link to comment
scoobymark
STI top mount is good for at least 400 bhp and works more efficiently with the OEM undertray. The hyperflow is well chunky and you would struggle to fit an undertray. thus alot of the air would be forced down the back of it and not throught it. also a dumpvalve can be a tight fit, you need to chop bits from under the bonnet!! so stick with STI one Link to comment

Rich The engine bay won't look standard anyway after what i've got planned Yeah it seems to be all about cost just now, the bling might be nice.. expensive, but nice. I guess AWD would do a good job of either installation. Mate, are you the chap who sells the scoops etc? I saw your website a while ago when looking at bigger scoops. Can I just ask something; Ideally, I want to keep the scoop i've got. But if I haaad to change it i'd never get the Sti8 one, but what are the sti7 ones like? from pictures it looks quite similar in design to the one I've got now, just flaired a bit. Another option I thought would be to have the sti8 one handy just for knockhill. Cheers. EDIT: just seen you sell a lot more than just scoops! seen a few pics now of the sti7 ones.. still a bit on the large side. sti8 scoop for track use then. Thought the undertray is best custom with sti8 t/m on classic? Edited October 14, 2009 by soundie Link to comment

Web-site is www.drmotorsport.co.uk Some reference points for you, your standard scoop has an opening height of 40mm and an overall height of 50mm Our taller STi 7 size scoop has an opening of 64mm and overall is 78mm high. And the forward facing STi 8 style is 74mm and 95mm high. We tried to keep the STi 7 scoops similar in style to the original scoop, but just made it taller - not everyone likes the STi 8 scoop. Obviously the more air you get onto the intercooler, the better it will perform. The STi 8 ones do perform the best and the forward facing design does capture the air better, so would be perfect for track days. David Link to comment

I'll be in touch regarding an Sti8 one for track use. Probably just keep the OEM one on for normal use though, obviously, with a modified undertray. So its interesting that nobody knows of any good reason to buy Hyperflow! Link to comment
