Phil MC
I'm just about to do a service on my 52 reg STi type uk and thought I'd check what the general concensus is. The car has just turned 80k miles and has been using 5w/40 Shell Helix Ultra (Fully Synthetic) for all of its life so far. Just thought that with the engine getting on in miles would I need to change the oil grade, or should I even be looking to change to a better make/spec of oil for this and future services? Cheers, Phil Link to comment

Also if there are recommendations for using a different brand or just keep using the same to aid the longevity of the engine? Link to comment
arch
Shell Helix is not a true fully synthetic oil. Try using http://www.millersoils.net/1_Millers_frame_MOTORSPORT.htm depending on budget and car usage http://www.motul-oil.co.uk/pdfs/300v-engin...40_TDS_(GB).pdf http://www.motul-oil.co.uk/products-300v-engine-oil.php I get mine from Alyn at AS Performance. The motul is prob overkill for a road car though. Link to comment

Funny you should say that Arch, I've just been researching for the last 1/2 hr to find that although the Shell Helix is sold as Synthetic, it is merely a Hydrocracked Petroleum based oil from refined mineral oil . Is it ok for me to change from using a Type 3 oil to a Type 4/5 (Millers/Motul), or will I need to flush it out first? I'll look at the Millers I think . How'd you get on this weekend anyway?
