Stick With Same Oil Or Change Spec?

Recommended Posts

I'm just about to do a service on my 52 reg STi type uk and thought I'd check what the general concensus is.

The car has just turned 80k miles and has been using 5w/40 Shell Helix Ultra (Fully Synthetic) for all of its life so far.

Just thought that with the engine getting on in miles would I need to change the oil grade, or should I even be looking to change to a better make/spec of oil for this and future services?

Cheers,

Phil

Cheers b4z,

As this has used fully synthetic oil all it's life I know that's what I'll stick with, but it was just more a question of whether you need to use a different grade of oil as your motor gets older or not?

Also if there are recommendations for using a different brand or just keep using the same to aid the longevity of the engine?

Shell Helix is not a true fully synthetic oil.

Try using

depending on budget and car usage

I get mine from Alyn at AS Performance. The motul is prob overkill for a road car though.

Funny you should say that Arch, I've just been researching for the last 1/2 hr to find that although the Shell Helix is sold as Synthetic, it is merely a Hydrocracked Petroleum based oil from refined mineral oil :rotfl: .

Is it ok for me to change from using a Type 3 oil to a Type 4/5 (Millers/Motul), or will I need to flush it out first?

I'll look at the Millers I think  .

How'd you get on this weekend anyway?
