Smiler AS Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 (edited) Hi, I have just finished upgrading the tiny intercooler on my 2.5 WRX in preparation of some work going to be carried out later this week. Dont shoot me down for asking this! Do you get a bit more lag with bigger TMIC's?? It is genuine STI item, initially I thought a hose was off, but no, a quick test drive and I was still hitting my usual 1.5 / 1.6 bar, so boost pressure ok. And a thank you to Bobby C for keeping me right about the brackets and I have copied your idea too with the red scoop splitter thingy. The teeney weeney std. WRX item... All done.. hi_jac Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Don't think you would lose any noticeable lag in fitting a STI TMIC. It's the longer pipework that comes with a FMIC that gives most of its lag. How much of a difference are we talking about ? Loving the red scoop splitter thingy
Smiler AS Posted September 5, 2009 Author Posted September 5, 2009 How much of a difference are we talking about ? Nothing major or to worry about, to be honest it actually made the car feel smoother when accelerating, thinking back, when the pipework was off I gave the throttle body a good clean up as it was a bit dirty.
hi_jac Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Did you get the car mapped after fitting it ?
Smiler AS Posted September 5, 2009 Author Posted September 5, 2009 Did you get the car mapped after fitting it ? Getting done this Thursday afternoon, and all going well, there will be VF34 in there too on Thu morning. Dont get me wrong, im not moaning or grumping somethings wrong, just feels slightly different.
bobbyc Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Look forward to seeing your results on Thursday, red thingy's are the dog's danglies
hi_jac Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 If you are happy its all buttoned up properly with no leaks then i would take it off again and wash it thoroughly with petrol to make sure its not clogged up. Good luck Thursday
jimser Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 1.5/6 bar on a 2.5 wrx,is that standard set up?ie before any map etc? seems a bit high, car will be rapid with a vf34 on it though
Smiler AS Posted September 6, 2009 Author Posted September 6, 2009 1.5/6 bar on a 2.5 wrx,is that standard set up?ie before any map etc?seems a bit high, car will be rapid with a vf34 on it though It is higher than std., car has been mapped already with the std. TD04 blowing as much puff as it can!
kennyuk300 Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 The splitter looks cool,Where did you get it from if you don't mind oh and does it come with the rubber seal? Cheers Kenny
oletam Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 I've got a VF34 on mine and then mapped by Andy. About 325bhp. Awesome accelaration. Ditto the red thingy-is it just painted or a new part. would look good on my black Hawkeye.
Smiler AS Posted September 6, 2009 Author Posted September 6, 2009 (edited) The red scoop splitter thingy is a std. STI item (was either jap performance parts or fleabay), came in black, just a good clean up and some red metal primer and paint (taped over the foam bits) , I luckily found one with seal, just unclips off while you paint away, same fixings as WRX too. dipsy Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 You don't see that type of Sti intercooler about fitted to just the 05 models onwards Jdm STI/Spec c
Smiler AS Posted September 6, 2009 Author Posted September 6, 2009 You don't see that type of Sti intercooler about fitted to just the 05 models onwards Jdm STI/Spec c Did wonder if any "eagle eyes" out there would spot it, yep, from a Spec C that was converted to a front mount via. Carl @ Power Supply.
DR Motosport Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 WRX or STi TMIC shouldn't make any difference. I had a customers car mapped by Andy Forrest last Wednesday with a similar spec to what your doing. 2006 2.5 WRX with STi intercooler, VF34, decat, etc. Andy took it to 1.4 bar; 350bhp and 378 lb ft. Pulls like a train from just under 3000 RPM
Smiler AS Posted September 6, 2009 Author Posted September 6, 2009 Andy took it to 1.4 bar; 350bhp and 378 lb ft. Pulls like a train from just under 3000 RPM I think I could live with figures like that!
C_WRX Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Do you mind me asking where you got your VF34 from, I keep an eye out for a good priced one now and again (for a one day hopefully future upgrade) and find they aren't easy to come by ?? I might be looking in the wrong place(s) !

I might be looking in the wrong place(s) ! Guy on scoobynet is selling one the now "beef on the bone" or something like that, £450 if i recall. Genuine item, has lots of photos, info and numbers on it. Almost went for it until I got a good trade in price for a new one with my TD04.

Smiler AS Posted September 7, 2009 Author Posted September 7, 2009 ...and you traded in with ? Was yours brand new ? AWD Perth (top notch guys) are supplying (genuine ordered through Subaru they said) and fitting the VF34, they know my car from working on it previously and are giving me discount (dont know the exact amounts but they have been good previously) with my low mileage TD04 (about 33k on it now), sure they mentioned previously Forester owners go for them as upgrade.

I might be looking in the wrong place(s) ! I got mine direct from Andy F. Still had to fit it though.
Smiler AS Posted September 10, 2009 Author Posted September 10, 2009 Well, fun, fun, fun! Down at AWD this morning to get a VF34 fitted and sportcat, makes it MOT friendly now that its first one is due in Nov. Anyway all went spot on, round to Andy F's in the afternoon. A few runs later, and bear in mind, mapped for 97 RON plus sportcat, 342bhp & 384lb/ft torque, more than chuffed!!!
Richie Cross Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Ooh..nice figures. Nice amount of torque from the 2.5 Wish I had one!!
Smiler AS Posted September 10, 2009 Author Posted September 10, 2009 Ooh..nice figures. Nice amount of torque from the 2.5 Wish I had one!! Yep, love it, and very little turbo lag too with the 2.5, would say the VF34 spools up every so slightly later than the TD04 and when it does, by heck!
cullenmin Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Quality figures min, I bet that was a fun drive back up to Elgin
