hacky Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Think my diff is knackered and rather than buy a second hand diff I would rather have mines reconditioned/rebuilt. Is there anyone in Glasgow, or surrounding area, that can do it? It is a R180 rear differential (4.44 ratio) with lsd as far as I am aware. It is from a type r with dccd if that makes any difference. Cheers, G
colin_ross Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Kenny Brown in Hillington. Straight talk from a guy who knows his stuff.
hacky Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 Thanks for the suggestions guys and the offer Arch. I will book it in for Kenny to take a look at it and get his opinion on the differential.
hacky Posted July 30, 2009 Author Posted July 30, 2009 The guys in Kenny Browns confirmed that the diff is definitely on its way out. In fact he reckons its imminent. Kenny wasn't in today but I've to phone back tomorrow to discuss rebuilding it, so I may well be in touch Arch for your rear diff. You should hear the noise this thing is making - horrible!
hacky Posted August 22, 2009 Author Posted August 22, 2009 WeeRISer update. So I bought archies diff and got Kenny to build me one using the best of the two. However the diff isn't matching up with my prop shaft. The bolts are sligtly different in position. Are their different companion flanges for r180 diffs? I just assumed it would be the same on both? I'll need to go back up to Kenny and get him to swap over with the other one, that is if he hasn't thrown the old one out!! Gutted

However it's a simple job to rectify. The locating spigot is the same, take your prop, offer it up to the diff flange 45degrees offset to the existing holes, clamp down with some Moleys, and drill new holes on the diff flange. Just make sure the new holes are the same diameter as the existing ones. My diff and spare are both drilled in case I need to change prop/diff combo quickly at an event. ---john--- Edited 'cause I is Dyslexic Edited August 22, 2009 by John Stevenson
arch Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 This happened to me as well. I didnt realise the diff was from a 6 speed. As John says it is common and I also had to do it on my race RA I will give you a bell tis afternoon.
hacky Posted August 22, 2009 Author Posted August 22, 2009 (edited) Having spoken with Archie on the phone I will just drill the flange. It beats trying to bum someone elses car to go up to Hillington to pick up the other one. Think I will just do it in situe as opposed to marking them up and removing the diff to do it, less chance of cocking it up! I knew it would simply be a case of getting the other companion flange from my old diff from Kenny or just drilling it. Looking at it I just assumed I wouldn't manage to drill it with a hand drill but if both of you (John, Archie) and Andy F have managed it, so will I!! Cheers for the call Archie, much appreciated, as is your reply John I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow. Edited August 22, 2009 by hacky
hacky Posted August 25, 2009 Author Posted August 25, 2009 Another update! Drilled the flange on Sunday there and it didnt quite take me 20 minutes but I did get it done! Took a while longer but Im putting that down to my rubbish drill bits (reminder to buy new ones!). First time in a good while I have been able to enjoy driving the car. So again big thanks to all those in the thread especially Archie. Top bloke - even offered to come down on his day off to give me a hand. Again, cheers guys.
