Turbo Intake Pipe Query

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Before anyone says it... no I haven't had this problem with my Dark Age (Hatch) STI... I like that as a designation! *chuckle*

Am however aware of people of various forums (and with various generations of scoobs I might add) having probs with the stock intake pipe collapsing under boost and therefore replacing with aftermarket kit.

Anyone done this? Any power gains/ problems etc? Any particular brand favoured - for example THIS... or just stick with stock?

Thoughts appreciated.

Any stock ones I've came accross have been hard plastic so no issues with them collapsing. They can be restrictive above certain power levels, limit your choice of turbo and in my case just rot away at the rubbers.

Samco seem to be just about the best if you want to go aftermarket but I'd be interested to hear why you want to do it.

heard of a few older Samco hoses collapsing but never the stock plasticy ones.

Avoid the cheap ones, I paid £100 I think it was for a Autobahn 88 one, didn't fit very well (at all), metal inserts to crank breathers/catch can were loose and it felt like it would have collapsed under very little boost. Only reason I got it was mine had split like playsatan's and the stock ones were on back order and I had a track day to do. Ended up not doing it

For the collapsing thing I suppose... wasn't in a hurry to do so. Was more interested than anything.

Perrin are certainly pushing their claim that the internal surface is more smooth giving better airflow and quicker spool-up, but I guess they're bound to say so and the gains are small relative to gains from, say, decent downpipe. Likewise their lightened crank pulley.

Out of interest (and please excuse my ignorance) anyone tell me what the other branches on the intake pipe are for? I assume one is a plumb-back from the turbo wastegate, but I couldn't figure the rest. Anyone?

Cheers

Can't remember for sure but there's a least one breather return, probably two, and the dump valve return also.

It's been a while since I had one though so may be wrong.. Here's my current setup

Hi there, the biggest return to the inlet is from the re-circ dump valve which runs under the inlet manifold, the others are crank and head breathers,The best reason for going aftermarket is to delete all of these otherwise standard is good up to fairly high power applications.cheers Gary
