badbaz Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 There's lots of posts on brakes, mainly discs and pads though. I'm intending to mod my car and after Cusco Kid has finished advise me on the suspension I'll want to do the brakes. Does the STi need bigger brakes, what's the concensus? The car will ultimately be fast road, potentially occasional track use, maybe eventually around 450bhp, don't want to spend any more than that!
scoobymark Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 if you have a spare 600 ish quid then Performance Friction disks and pads will stop you everytime there was a group buy on scoobynet not sure if still going
badbaz Posted May 31, 2009 Author Posted May 31, 2009 if you have a spare 600 ish quid then Performance Friction disks and pads will stop you everytime there was a group buy on scoobynet not sure if still going Does this mean front Brembos are good enough then?
jimser Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Does this mean front Brembos are good enough then? brembo calipers are fine for 450bhp,as mark says you just need the right disc/pad combination.
badbaz Posted May 31, 2009 Author Posted May 31, 2009 brembo calipers are fine for 450bhp,as mark says you just need the right disc/pad combination. Are we talking better stopping power or just fade free stopping for repeated use?
Rednosespeccltd Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) Barry, I have PF discs and pads on my car, very very good mate and was put to the test on the run last Thur, not a bit of fade and highly reccommended. However i have had issues with mine and to cut a long story short if you only do short journeys and dont get them up to temp you will not get the best wear from them as i found out as i only do 6 miles a day and 4500 and they are half worn already, have had a new set froM PFUK, However i would not buy them from AZTEC PERFORMANCE as he has been a drama as well and are not fully PF UK dealers. Mac Don't like the sound of that Mac, supply issues I mean, I've emailed Godspeed about their 335mm kit, it looks good to me. Can anyone comment or advise? I like the sound of keeping 17" wheels on the car, makes less expense and I think I'd struggle to get strong enough wheels without spending a small fortune!
Rednosespeccltd Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Dont get me wrong mate, the brakes are top class in every way when you need them, however they need to be up to temp to be the best they can be and as i normally dont do that more of the pad is worn and the disc. If you use your car regular and longer than my commute then you will not have any issues at all, PF UK have been great and helped me with another set cheap and i can keep my original ones even though the place i bought them from are not officialPFUK dealers, they were 13 months old ans covered 4500 miles. there are loads of official dealers mate, zen performance being one of them also when i had my Spec C it had DBA brakes and they were just as good, extreme performance supply them. Hope that helps, you can have a butchers on the next Lanark meet mate. Mac
Rednosespeccltd Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Group buys on scoobynet:K SPORT http://bbs.scoobynet.com/group-buys-356/76...save-388-a.html godspeed: http://bbs.scoobynet.com/group-buys-356/70...-group-buy.html godspeed discs and AP calipers: http://bbs.scoobynet.com/group-buys-356/76...pers-895-a.html Hope that helps. Mac
jimser Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Cheers Mac, will do.Any Godspeed supporters? i've used godspeed bells/rotors on my 3 subarus to date.not used his 335 conversion kit as i had ap calipers on my first 2 cars.just fitted a set last week with ferrodo 2500 pads.does the job for me and will still use the same combination when the cars running 450-500 bhp.wouldn't think there would be too much difference between the alcon and brembo calipers
scooby222 Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 il be going for the ksport setup at some point soonish for my 05 sti, value for money and a good reputation make it hard to beat i think- and i can keep 330mm discs for 17's at winter
sma01 Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 the brakes on my car are definitely 1 of the best mods ive made, after a session at KH a few years back the brembos were just not up to the job IMHO, just ask dunc @ hypertech(he was part to blame as well ).. got a set of AP's for the front and the improvement was like night and day...when the back discs and pads were ready to be done i decided to change the calipers too, roger clark were in process of getting APs for the back too so i ordered them and after what seemed like a massive wait they came through, the braking on the car is superb(from what i remember since its been so long scott
badbaz Posted June 2, 2009 Author Posted June 2, 2009 Had a prompt reply from Ian at Godpseed, 335 kit is for WRX's, bah! I'll get back to him and see what he recommends. I like the way the guy operates, warranty etc. Update to follow.
badbaz Posted June 3, 2009 Author Posted June 3, 2009 Well, the deal is done. After speaking with Cusco Kid about my suspension mods, I took the plunge and ordered Performance Friction discs and pads as he gave them the thumbs up too. Fingers crossed all will be well, I've ordered them direct from them in Banbury and they should be here tomorrow! I'm glad I don't need calipers or wheels as this will make the mod process a little bit cheaper and quicker! Photos will follow, fitting may need to wait till next week . . . .
Rednosespeccltd Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Good choice mate, you won't be dissapointed, trust me. mac

badbaz Posted June 8, 2009 Author Posted June 8, 2009 Here's gratuitous shots of said parts Pads are in the box, too expensive to risk flash photography Hope it does what it says on the tin! So here they lie on the workshop floor which is exactly where they will remain until Saturday as I'm too busy till then! They feel very good, look very good quality, pads are thin though as the disc is very thick! I'm trying to think of a real world test to compare their efficiency against the originals.
badbaz Posted June 13, 2009 Author Posted June 13, 2009 It's brake day! Off shortly to fit the parts, i'll post pics up later for anyone who's interested. Hoping it's all straightforward!
