mystery machine
...turned out to be a bottle of red wine that had broken loose from a shopping bag in the boot OK - daft topic for a thread, but I was having so much fun out there tonight on the B-roads I just had to share that with youse We could turn this into a decent discussion though.. Did any of you get out for a belt today? I thought I'd get a few twisty miles in before the rain arrives tomorrow... Link to comment

mystery machine
If you know Fort William area you know what I mean.I do indeed - been up through Glencoe and on to FW many a sunny day. One of my favourite parts of Scotland, that (ya lucky bam). Most of the main roads are a bit fast to have any sort of fun on (if you want to stay more-or-less within the speed limits), but I'll bet there are some great little B-roads that I haven't discovered yet. Can you recommend any nice wee stretches, Phil? Don't often get up that way these days (price of petrol, etc), but I'm always looking for new roads to enjoy. Cheers. Link to comment

Mmmm, right depends what your looking for. A road that heads somewhere or a road in the middle of nowhere that goes to nothing. To test the car out, brakes and handling, I use the Glen Nevis. Most visitors only go as far as the Lower Falls, but if you carry on going you end up with road that doesnt look out of place of WRC special road stage. Sheer drops, hairpins, jumps and so on. Fort William to Inverness, most people take the most direct route. At Fort Agustus take the back road to Inverness, you travel on the other side of Loch Ness. Some of the best scenery you will ever see. A lot less traffic and some of the best twisties around, with a fecking long straight with several jumps on it. Fort William to Spean Bridge, take the back road starting at Banavie. Again twisties, hairpins, single track sections. Thats just a small taste, there is so many sections to play on. Gus will know what I mean, there is too many to list. Also most of the coppers are good guys, petrolheads. Dont act like a nob, they leave you alone. mystery machine
Thanks for all the great suggestions, Phil! The Fort Agustus -> Inverness back road sounds really interesting (I've only ever taken the direct route). If we get anything approaching an 'Indian summer's day' this year, I'll check that one out! Big Gordon
I know the Glen Nevis road well, been airborne a few times on that wee stretch Link to comment

Sheer drops, hairpins, jumps and so on. went for a run up A9 cut over to fort william at dalwhinnie then down through glencoe yesterday (my favourit roads) bar the A9 part and the streatch from lochearnhead to perth (boring parts) glen nevis road is something else got a nice jump or 2 by the time i got to glencoe (7ish) the roads were the quietest i have ever seen and got through glencoe in about 10mins using an estimated £1 per min of fuel. great drive made better by great weather Link to comment
martin_allen
Which Glen Nevis road? I'm sure i've been on it but i am struggling to picture it! Also like the road from the back of Oban down towards Glasgow. That's some funky tarmac. 5t. Link to comment
ur.a.bus
its the road the nevis campsite is on (foot of nevis, walkers side), pass the campsite and the stretch of road from the cattle grid to the wee car park at the end of the road is great. i don't like the section past the lower falls car park though as its a bit tight. waterfall 15min walk from the last car park is great. i think this is the road we are taking about anyway Link to comment

Never thought of it as particularly long though! Think the last time i went down there it was covered with Highland Coos so had to keep the speed down! 5t. Link to comment

Thats the best bit everyone thinks it stops at the Lower Fall bridge, but it still continues for another few miles up into the hills. With a mixture of single track and narrow roads. Link to comment
