Which Turbo

While driving the car under normal driving its seems to run fine, but if i was to put my foot down to over take or pull away under power the enine dies of all revs and tries to shoot me out of the windscreen and then picks up again, it happens in every gear ( don't know about first as don't give it the beans in this gear ) when it happens i get on dash warning lights come on. I've changed all the coils, spark plugs, fuel filter and upgraded the fuel pump, and it still happens. I also have an oil leak coming from around the turbo/ up pipe area which only happens when the car has been not used all week but stops if i use it all week. To see where the oil is coming from the turbo and up pipe have to come off the car so while they are off might as well up grade them. I'm looking at a Td05 turbo but don't know which one to get e.g 20g, 18g, 16g. My engine is totaly standard apart from up graded water pump and oil pump. Don't want to go to big with the turbo and turn the engine into soup, was thinking of an ecu upgrade later on some time and a remap, I also don't want to start up grading engine parts and going over the top on bhp.

So in a nut shell bigger turbo that will go well the a standard engine with a furture remap at some point.

Any help or advice as i'm getting lost looking at all turbos. Have a budget of around £1200 for turbo and up pipe.

sounds like u was jsut hitting fuel cut wear u shoot out the windscreen and the light comes on the dash mine done in when we had really cold damp moist air a few months ago if you get turbo like 20g or 18g iirc ud need a remap just go for the normal td05 that ive got i think they are better then the tdo4 in a few ways.

Its not just a matter of getting a new turbo a a remap mate, more power means more things to go wrong. Your gearbox will need looking at as well as your clutch and then you have to consider your fueling and engine internals. You need to make a plan as to what you want from the car and them work to that plan. i would not fit a new turbo without a remap unless it was the same turbo as you have on the car because they all spool/fuel differantly and if you get it wrong you will need a new engine !!!!!!!

Think about what you want the car to do and then get the bits you need to do it

I'd go with Twenty, sounds like fuel cut to me as well. could be your wastegate, or actuator sticking or your boost solenoid or pipework, causing it to overboost, have you got a boost gauge fitted to tell you what your charge pressure is, ?

As i said not looking for over the top bhp. just want a turbo to go with a standard engine no up grades to engine parts or gearbox. was lookng to see what would be the best.

Not got a boost gauge fitted to see if its over boosting.

The problem that needs sorting is the oil leak while the turbo and up pipe was off thought about up grading all parts. As most of you can tell don't know much about cars so any help or advice would be great.

i say standard 16g but get an ecu first then can have it mapped or do what 20 said an get a z4 you will not need to upgrade engine parts or gearbox an clutch an you can prob push the boost up a little an get around the 300bhp mark your only problem if you want to go a little further will be injectors as they will be on there limit if there standard

an it does seem like fuel cut as 20 said i have a spare boost gauge if you want to plump it in an see what you are hitting mate

i agree with the rest fuel cuty off if you change turbo you will need re map and your ecu is not mappable so get z4 and replace turbo with similar you should be ok with that

If it is possible to borrow spare boost gauge that would be great.

Thanks to all and your advice.

people agree with me :rotfl::hl::lol::beer::lol::lol::rotfl::rotfl::):lol:

20, Dont get cocky!! :rotfl::lol::rotfl:

20 is right though, sounds like fuel cut, on overboost.

WHY do you want to change turbo? Youll make 300 Bhp easily with your standard setup and some mods like remap and filter and exhaust.

and WHY WHY WHY are you even considering doing turbo upgrades when you havent got a boost guage?? PLEASE start with the essential things like boost guage, decent up pipe and down pipe and then sort the air in (filter and IC) before you contemplate turbo!!

This is like filling the car on jet fuel expecting it to be the best way of making power!!

nothing wrong with that mate :) jet fuel works every time for me mate

hes spot on :( mines still running on the same turbo, its been re-mapped, new injectors, full de-cat, xtreme down pipe ( ecutek map by ecutek partner pat herborn £650+vat) boost gauge etc, all done by xtreme scoobies, so it might be worth you giving them a ring for some advice, mines a uk spec, & its got to be up near the 300bhp mark :banana:

Blue V......Looney Toon's advice is worth noting. If you want more power, engine & transmission issues are vital. You will need to plan your project otherwise expect eventual breakages.

Eureka & myself are both modifying our cars to a high spec and it becomes a long term project.

Also consider a realistic budget for yourself. Big power = £'s....... lots of £'s.

Up to 380 - 400bhp isn't too bad. If you are aiming at 400 - 600+ it's big bucks mate.

My block & internals are virtually the same as the Gobstopper and I am still restricted to just over 400bhp until I replace the box / prop / diff /drive shafts / suspension / brakes etc.

Thanks to dazzler i have borrowed a boost gauge. The car cuts out at around 1.25 bar or just over. Have spoken to dean 666 and taken him out in the car to show how it cuts out and when. Have been given the advice that it might be a split pipe as a standard engine shouldn't over boost. I have a TD04 on the car at present, and the reason for changing it is i have an oil leak around by the turbo and up pipe and can't find where it is coming from unless i take the turbo off and up pipe, as it was off and save paying out twice to take the turbo off replace with a TD05. Knowing that putting on a bigger turbo will not give me more power without other bits being done to the engine. Not going to buy turbo untill other one is off and oil leak was found just incase other parts need to be replaced to stop oil leak.
