t1000arab Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I got a new spoiler for my blob eye WRX today and I'm looking for some fitting advice. First of all, getting the old spoiler off. The bolts are recessed, so it looks like I'll need to get a box spanner? I've tried to measure the size of the bolts with a pair of scissors, and it looks like their 11mm. Does that sound right? Secondly, fitting the new spoiler. Anybody got any advice, or ran into any troubles doing it themselves? It seems simple enough... (famous last words) It's an STI spoiler btw. Thanks for any help

pmacFTO Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 (edited) I have an STI8 spoiler in the garage from pretty much just after I got the car and still never got it fitted It's even the right colour! It looked to me like you need to drill extra holes - did you do that? I assume you had the very low level spoiler originally? Edited September 4, 2008 by pmacFTO

I assume you had the very low level spoiler originally? Yeh I had the standard low level spoiler, which is held on by 4 bolts. The new spoiler had holes in the same 4 places, so it's now held on by 4 bolts. No drilling required . Get someone to help you though, it's deffo a 2 man job. (unless you can juggle )
craigdmcd Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Not trying to knock your spoiler, but it sounds like you have an aftermarket one if it is only held on with 4 bolts. pmac, it sounds as if you have an original STi spoiler that has approx 11 extra holes or 11 in total IIRC. When you buy the spoiler from Subaru, it comes with a template of where to drill the holes. At the time, I worked with a very skilled panel-beater, and he taped the template to the bootlid, drilled the holes, and at the trial fit point, we only had to elongate 1 hole by .5 mm. I unfortuantely don't think I have the template any more, although I will have a look and see if it is in the corner of my mum's garage. FWIW, I still think that these are the best looking spoilers from Subaru with perhaps a possible exception of some of the Spec C variants.

I got the spoiler from Scoobyworld, and I'm pretty sure it was the proper one. It had 16 holes for fitting, but I only used 4 of them so I wouldn't have to drill into my boot.

Did you get the template- you could lend it to pmacFTO if he wants to do the whole drilling scenario. Just had a look on Scoobyworld's website, and a genuine STi spoiler is £695 now. I bought mine for about £850 including discount IIRC.

It came with loads of bits of plastic, that might be used to create a template, but I just ignored it and used the holes that were already there. If you wanted to use all of the holes, and didn't have a template, Mitchel had a good idea: Put toothpaste in the holes on the spoiler, line it up correctly on your boot lid, then drill where the toothpaste left a mark on the boot.

That is an aftermarket spoiler, but to be honest, who really knows the difference without closer inspection. The studs on the original STi one are not removable as far as I'm aware.
