Buying My First Scooby But What?

Well joined here about 4years ago planning to buy an impreza but due to insurance being daft i never did and bought a VR6 golf instead. Finally my training offshore has finished and i start a new job on Thu meaning more money plus now im 25 and have 4 years no claims. :P

I was planning to buy my first house about now along with a new car but due to the property market being a bit unstable i have decided to wait a while and buy a new car now to keep me entertained. ;)

I have about 7-8000 to spend and want a classic.

I seriously fancy an V3 or 4 STI classic but am swaying towards a Type-r ;)

My only worry is they seem rather prone to blowing up and alot seem to have had a rebuild

if i buy one will i need to budget for a rebuild or is it just a matter of servicing regulary and properly?

Also do the back seats in a type-r fold down??

how low is the low ratio box i.e how many RPM at 70mph??

How much does it take to fill the tank and how many miles can i expect to the tank??

any other advice/info would be welcome.

cheers

Ciaran

First off mate - good choice. That sort of money should buy you a well looked after classic. Be fussy and buy on condition and the vibes you get from the owner rather than mileage.

Il'll try and answer your questions based on my type r experiences

Blow up - yes they can do. Treat them right tho and they're as reliable as any other subaru. Reglar servicing, obsevring warm up and coll down periods and using the proper fuel in a well thought out state of tune should see you right.

Back sets - no, they don't fold down.

Rpm/mph - in top they do 19mph per 1k prm so 70 ish is abput 4k. That is unless you buy a type r v-ltd, they have a taller 5th gear. It sounds like it's revving it's t1ts off the first time you drive it but you soon get used to it. I had a proven 160mph out of mine so don't worry about it limiting the top end.

The tank is the same as any other classic, 60 ltrs I think. My worst mpg was 6 but that was a track day.

Other advise......one of the best subaru's ever made and becoming rarer all the time. Get one while you still can, subaru don't make them any more you know.

When i go to look at any cars i will be taking a mate of mine who infact works for AWD so he knows his stuff.

Most likely take a drive down south for one as that is where most seem to be.

It is quite clear from most adverts who is a dedicated owner who looks after their car and who is a boy racer who has not looked after the car.

Is there any sorts of mods that can be done to make the chances of the engine blowing less likely?

Are their any flaws with type-r's i need to look out for?

First mod I ever did was a knocklink, it just might save your engine.

The main thing to check for when buying one is accident damage. They can be a bit, well, lively ;)

thought about importing one but it is the hassle of getting it coverted from km to mph and then getting it mapped for uk fuel that puts me off when i can buy one with all that done and a few wee goodies also yes i am a lazy git

good choice in going for a classic

re your post, you may not need to get it converted from km to mph - i've got a little paper conversion chart wedged in my dashboard and that does the job. You'll get to a point where you'll memorise the km speeds anyway :banana2:

map for UK fuel - not an issue, you'll be wanting a remap anyway to get the best from the engine and/or any mods you might make

would recommend the import route if you are not in a rush, chapman seems to find great cars on auction and its worth the hassle, as there is a lot more choice over in Japan.

the registration process once it is off the boat is ok and tbh the importer does all that stuff for you.

if the Type R isnt exactly what you are after would recommend a RA - a great model of Impreza and comes with a lot of goodies as standard

what timescale does an import take??

could be interested would be great to get a seriously low milage car and start from scratch with it myself

who do people use/reccomend?

Type R is the way to go, I imported using SC Imports and all I had to do was collect the car(MOT, converted, tax'd was all done). If you are wanting a toy it might be worth buying something a little cheaper to leave you a budget for mods and upgrades.

Trust me once you get a scooby you won't be able to help yourself thinking 'What next?'
